Domain of Lord Matsudaira Izu-no-kami
20th day — Mori-koji Village, Higashinari District, Settsu Province
Arrested and imprisoned in the 2nd month of the Year of the Rooster — Physician Bun'ya
Upon thorough investigation of the above matter, it was found that [the suspect] is the son of Rokuhēji, a paper goods merchant of Misawa Village in Shimabara, Hizen Province. Approximately twenty years ago, he left his hometown to study medicine. About seventeen years ago, with the assistance of Hikosaburō of Kaiwaki Village in Settsu Province, he established a residence in Higashi-koji Village and practiced medicine. He took as his wife a daughter of [a residence associated with] Yokoshuji Temple in Shimo-Fukushima Village, and three children were born. He also took in his wife's mother, Uta, and the household consisted of six people.
The aforementioned Uta had, for the past seven years, been going to the residence of Ōshio Heihachirō to assist with sewing and household matters. She had been there until the morning of the 19th [of the 2nd month], when the fire broke out. On that same day she returned to Bun'ya's residence, and immediately thereafter made her way toward Yawata. This is what [Bun'ya] himself stated. It has been reported that [Uta] was subsequently arrested in Kyoto by the retainers of Lord Izu-no-kami.
Furthermore, in late the 5th month of the current year [Tenpō 7, 1836], [Bun'ya] visited Heihachirō's residence and received thirty-seven relief distribution tickets (segyōfuda), which he distributed to the impoverished people of his village. In order to express his gratitude for this, members of Heihachirō's party visited around the 5th and 6th of last month [1st month of Tenpō 8], informing him of the planned uprising.
【Left folio】
[They told him that] as there was a plan [for the uprising], he should affix his seal to the document of solidarity. Heihachirō had a written document read aloud to [Bun'ya]; he does not recall the exact wording, but the gist was that there was a plan to bring about a new era of civil and martial governance, and that [all signatories] should follow the directions of their teacher [Ōshio] without deviation in any matter. Under the name Yokoyama Bun'ya, [he] wrote [his name] in his own hand and affixed a blood seal.
Prior to this, Genemon and Denshichi of Hannyaji Village had also signed the document of solidarity. Furthermore, [Bun'ya] stated that he was at home on the 19th of last month [the day of the uprising].
