There, the stone lanterns that had been placed here and there had all toppled over, and I climbed over them to get through. I had tatami mats brought out and remained on top of them until the following day. Throughout this time, strong tremors continued without cease, along with sounds like the firing of a one-kanme cannon, and the sky was clear, with the stars appearing larger and more brilliant than usual. Up to this point, the weather had been like that of summer. During all this, there appeared to be a fire breaking out in the direction of Zenkoji Temple, and fires also broke out in various other locations. My retainers rushed out one after another, and among those who came to my side was a man named Terauchi Takamiya, who had previously served as a kuyōnin (administrative official). He reported that his own house had collapsed and his son had been trapped under the roof, but they had managed to pull him out with great difficulty. He said his son was mostly unharmed but had suffered minor injuries, which was why he himself had been delayed in arriving. Over a hundred townhouses had collapsed, there were fatalities as well, and from the day after—
