**Report from the territory of Sakakibara Shikibu-no-taifu** Regarding the villages of Kubiki District in Echigo Province, which fall under the domain of Sakakibara Shikibu-no-taifu: we previously submitted a report that a major earthquake struck on the night of the 24th day of last month, resulting in collapsed houses and casualties. However, as small tremors have continued every day since then without ceasing, we have been conducting official business in makeshift huts of bamboo screen erected outside the office. Under these circumstances, yet another major earthquake struck around midday on the 29th of last month, and we have received further reports of collapsed houses and deaths in the villages, as well as paddy seedling beds and fields being buried under soil. Furthermore, rice that had been transported by river and stored in the granaries at Imacho and Minatocho was reported to have been lost, with the granaries fully collapsed and the rice bales scattered and disordered. We immediately dispatched officials to investigate. From the 24th through the 29th, not a single drop of rain had fallen; however, starting from the dawn of the last day of the month (misoka), heavy rain began to fall, and since then strong winds have blown at intervals, with reports of sleet falling in the upper-district villages. We will report further details in due course, but for now submit this preliminary notification. Respectfully submitted. 2nd day of the 4th month, Year of the Sheep (Hitsuji) — Servant of Sakakibara Shikibu-no-taifu, Bu(betsu)to Monzo (sealed) --- **Report Regarding the Major Earthquake — Under the Jurisdiction of Takagi Seizaemon** In Minochiura Village, Takai District, Shinano Province, which is currently under my administration as a daikan (magistrate's) territory: beginning around the middle of the Hour of the Dog (approx. 8–9 p.m.) on the night of the 24th of this month and continuing through the upper part of the Hour of the Boar (approx. 9–10 p.m.), a major earthquake struck. Continuous tremors followed, with earthquakes occurring at intervals thereafter. The shaking gradually subsided around the middle of the Hour of the Hare (approx. 6 a.m.) on the following day, the 25th. However, the ground cracked open and muddy water gushed forth; many houses collapsed, and large numbers of people, cattle, and horses perished. There were households in which every family member died without exception. The number of injured persons was enormous, and some villages were entirely reduced to rubble. Reports of unprecedented calamities have been arriving one after another, and we have promptly dispatched our agents (tedai) to the scene. As for Nakano Village, where the district office (jinya) is located, while there is some structural damage to houses, the office itself has sustained no particular harm. We will report the full details in due course, but...
