（明の）暦の未の年に及んで、西洋の天文・地球渾円の図が支那に渡来した。彼の説はおおよそ渾天（説）と符節を合わせるものであった。それゆえ、倭漢（日本・中国）両朝において、彼の西説をもって談天（天文を論じること）の補弼（助け）とするに至った。予はもとより不敏にして、その学に達した者ではないけれども、かつて『天學略名目』および『地転窮理論』・『西洋異譚』を述べて、学ぶ者（家童）に示した。しかしながら、その言はいまだ尽くしていないゆえに、今、羽翼（補足の著作）を著し、あわせて西洋の新奇なるケプラーの説を増補する。庶くは後昆（後世）の童蒙が、天学に登る高きへの𥚺梯（石段・きざはし）とならんとて、云々。

It was in the "未" year of the [Ming] calendar that the Western astronomical charts depicting the Earth as a perfect sphere arrived in China. That theory corresponded remarkably well with the huntian (渾天, "celestial sphere") school of thought. Consequently, both Japan and China came to use this Western theory as a supplement to astronomical discourse. Though I myself am not a man of great talent and have not fully mastered this learning, I had previously written the *Tengaku Ryaku Maimoku* ("A Brief Glossary of Astronomical Terms"), the *Chiten Kyūriron* ("A Treatise on the Principles of the Earth's Rotation"), and the *Seiyō Itan* ("Strange Tales from the West"), to instruct those who study this subject. However, as those works did not fully exhaust the subject, I have now composed this *Uyoku* (supplementary work, "Wings"), and have additionally incorporated the novel theories of Kepler from the West. I humbly hope that it may serve as a stone stairway — a means of ascending toward the heights of astronomical learning — for the uninitiated students of later generations.
