They were able to conduct their business. The accumulated ash and sand was approximately 1 shaku 1 sun (roughly 33 cm) deep, and in wind-blown drifts, it reached 1 shaku 4-5 sun (approximately 44-45 cm). Among the weaker structures, 2 houses belonging to those performing the post-horse duty (godenma-yaku) were crushed, along with many other outbuildings and smaller structures. The crops in the fields go without saying, but all green leaves were destroyed as well, leaving no fodder for horses, and complaints of hardship were submitted. This concerns the four post-towns along the Nakasendo in Kozuke Province under the magistrate's jurisdiction; due to the volcanic rocks and falling ash from Mount Asama, the three post-towns in Shinano Province in particular have been reduced to what is effectively a state of abandonment. However, as the eruption has not yet subsided and the clerks dispatched to the area are unable to conduct their inspections, we will report further details in due course, but for now we submit this report as above. 7th month, Year of the Rabbit Endō Hyōbe-uemon We humbly submit this report via the post-town relay system. We, the wholesaler (toiya) and elders (toshiyori) of Satte-juku on the Nikkō Highway, respectfully report the following. At Gongen-dō, located approximately 8 chō (roughly 870 meters) to the east of our post-town (situated within the Nakatone River), from last night until midday today, the 9th, houses and storehouses have been damaged. Vertical posts of 5-6 sun square, beams of 4-5 shaku in diameter, thresholds, lintels, door planks, horizontal braces, bamboo, the straw from when the roofs were thatched, and other household items including mortars, pestles, lacquered stacking boxes, tubs, and bowls were smashed to fine pieces. Raw pine trees of 4-5 shaku in diameter were snapped in two at heights of 5-6 shaku to 1 jō (approximately 1.5 to 3 meters), with bark stripped away, and both the base ends and tips shredded like fringe. For fifty to sixty ken across the river, filling the entire width of the river, even the passage of boats... [continues]
