**[Translation of current page]** ...so that the national polity (*kokutai*) of our Divine Realm and the august prestige of the Shogunate may both be upheld, and so that all, from the greater and lesser samurai down to the common people, may become of one mind and one body — correcting the great principle of *sonnō jōi* (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians), making clear the bonds of duty between lord and retainer, high and low, and arranging matters so that all under heaven may share alike in life and death. This is the humble loyalty with which we, your servants, casting aside our very lives, have slain the villainous schemer, and now earnestly petition and appeal to the various officials responsible for the Shogunate's important governance. *Sei kō kin gen* (Respectfully and reverently submitted) Statement of Intent to Slay the Villains (*Zankan Shui-sho*) Mishima Saburō Ochi Tsūsū **[Chinese verse (translation)]** Resolved, I take up my sword and wish to sweep away the thorns and brambles — A single blade, directed straight, can match the might of a million soldiers. Yet — Was this not, from the very beginning, all the will of Heaven? I desire only to leave behind a name of loyal devotion and service to my country. **[Japanese waka poem]** *Taore temo / mata okinu ran / waga kokoro* *Shiko no taoreshi / tsukuru toki made* Even if I fall, my spirit shall rise again — Until the very moment when every last villain has been brought low. Toyohara Kuninosuke Taira no Chikatada **[Japanese waka poem]** *Kasoiro no / sodateshi mi wo mo / kimi no tame* *Suteru wa yoyo no / megumi to omoeba* Even this body, nurtured by my father and mother, I cast aside for my lord — for I believe this is the blessing handed down through generations.
