**[Right folio]** (Continued from previous page) ...a small amount of white sugar should be added, and it should be given alternately with the medicine. Even if the patient's thirst is severe, oriental melon (makuwa-uri), watermelon, pear, jujube (natsume), mandarin orange, grape, tokoroten (agar jelly), cold wheat noodles, and cold water are all absolutely forbidden and must not be given. Glutinous rice (mochigome) gruel is also to be forbidden and not given once the pus has sufficiently formed. Only plain white rice gruel should be given. ○ Around the sixth or seventh day, during the time of pus formation, itching will develop in many cases. At that time, the caregiver must pay close attention and ensure that the patient does not scratch the eruptions open. Even in a favorable case, if the eruptions are rubbed and broken, qi (vital energy) will leak from that point, the zhengyang (vital yang energy / life force) will be lost, and inward-striking symptoms will develop, reaching a state beyond rescue. This must be feared and guarded against with the utmost care. If the itching is severe and the patient writhes in distress, small azuki beans should be placed in a cotton bag and gently pressed against the surface of the eruptions from the side. However, this is only to be done to the extent of calming the patient's feelings. If pressed too firmly, thinking it will certainly stop the itching, the **[Left folio]** tips (tops) of the eruptions will end up being damaged and broken. This must be strictly guarded against. ○ When the pox eruptions have burst and ulcerated, and pus fluid is flowing out without drying, finely powdered azuki beans should be dusted over them. Buckwheat flour is also suitable. Although there are many other medicines available, they must not be used indiscriminately. Furthermore, in folk remedies, powdered unglazed earthenware (kawarake) is used, but this too is inadvisable. ○ Even if something is called a "wondrous medicine or extraordinary remedy" for smallpox, it must not be used recklessly. There are many cases in which Kiō-gan (奇応丸), Kyūmei-gan (救命丸), and common bear bile (kumanoi) have been used and caused harm. Great caution is required. ○ In ordinary households, narwhal horn (ichiкaku / "unicorn horn") and rhinoceros horn (saikaku) have been handed down as wondrous remedies for smallpox, and they are applied indiscriminately without distinguishing cold or heat, deficiency or excess patterns, causing no small amount of harm. Although both of these substances may on occasion be used in cases of excess pattern (jisshō) with severe heat toxin, if used even in small amounts in a deficiency pattern (kyoshō), they will cause great harm. Great caution is required. ○ Regarding the two items brought from Holland — saffron (Safuran) and theriac (Teriyāka) — among the general populace... [continued on next page]
