そんなときには、土地の人が堤を切り落として淵へ落とすのだという。この淵は火縄蔓が生い茂り、幾半畳ともわからず、底の限りも知れない魔所であるとて、恐れるのも道理である。異形の鳥が飛び歩いている。その姿の恐ろしいことといったら、頭は蜜柑九年坊の皮に似て、尾は紙を引き裂いたようである。目鼻らしき物もなくて、飛行自在の化け鳥である。ある時、この者がこの化け鳥を退治すべきだとて、青切りの勢い猛々しく、一度に十六杯を飲み干して、「南無大酒三升五合」と心に信じ、「いよっ、金箱大明神様々々、ありがたや」と申します、と高らかに念じて、無二無三に淵底へ飛び込んだところ、不思議にも俄かに騒がしく、おびただしい人声で「罰が当たるぞ、引っ込め」「もっともだぞ」「やい、頭が高い、早く歩け」と口々に鳴り騒ぐかと思う間に、すさまじい腕力で、宙に引きずり引き出されたが、危うくも命は助かったということだ。その他、台州本舞台の都に、さまざまな名所旧跡、面白い雑談など、道すがら物語ると聞いて、まず楽州へと急いだのであった。

At such times, the locals would cut down the embankment and drop it into the abyss. This abyss is overgrown with fire-rope vines, its extent unknown—perhaps many tatami mats wide—and it is a demonic place whose bottom cannot be fathomed, so it is reasonable to fear it. A strange bird flies about there. Its frightful appearance has a head resembling the skin of a nine-year mandarin orange, and a tail like torn paper. It has nothing resembling eyes or nose, and is a supernatural bird that flies at will. One time, a certain person decided to exterminate this monster bird. With the fierce momentum of an "ao-kiri" role, he drank sixteen cups at once, believing in his heart "Hail to the great sake, three sho and five go," and chanting loudly "Bravo! Kanebako Daimyojin, how grateful, how grateful!" He leaped headlong into the bottom of the abyss. Strangely, it suddenly became noisy, with tremendous human voices shouting "You'll be punished! Get back!" "That's right!" "Hey! Lower your head and walk quickly!" Just as he thought everyone was clamoring, he was dragged up into the air by tremendous arm strength and pulled out, but his life was fortunately saved. Besides this, hearing that there were various famous places and historical sites in the capital of Daishu main stage, and interesting miscellaneous stories told along the way, he first hurried toward Gakushu.
