The above pertains to the villages of Takai and Mizuchi Districts of Shinano Province under my magistrate administration and temporarily entrusted lands, of which prior notice has already been submitted. On the night of the twenty-fourth day of the third month of this year, a great earthquake struck, causing houses throughout the area to shake violently and collapse. Beams, crossbeams, pillars, and ceilings fell upon residents, and many were crushed to death. Those who sustained injuries initially lost consciousness, and though they regained their senses after a while, those with severe injuries remained in agony where they lay. The injured crawled through gaps here and there, painstakingly finding exits, tearing through thatched roofs or breaking through walls to escape outside. However, as it was the dead of night, they were at a complete loss, and since aftershocks continued to strike at intervals, the condition of people could not be determined at all, and things remained as they were. As dawn broke, those who had safely evacuated the previous night came one after another, and their energy revived. As they checked on household members along the roads, many found that parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, and servants were unaccounted for. Concluding that these missing persons must be trapped under collapsed houses, they cooperated with one another, breaking through roofs and walls to open passageways, and proceeded to
