少々鳴候儀はも只折々少々宛震致候迄二而夫ゟ碓氷峠江戸之方江

一昨廿四日夜四時頃大地震二而松平飛騨守様知行所信州更級郡
塩崎村高弐千九百石余之村方二而潰家千四五百軒怪我人多く人数即死
六拾人程有之私共旅宿之儀も震潰れ私共并小者両人とも
無難二立退伝馬御證文之義は持退候二付別條無御座候誠二古今
稀成大地震二而田畑共われ中二ハ夥敷水を吹出し候場所も有之
塩崎村御普請所之儀堤石積等は荒方崩落千曲川之儀も常水ゟ
弐三丈増水仕候得共私共此上異変無御座候は格別之出水も有之間敷哉と
奉存候右は塩崎村二不限近郷都而潰家怪我人等も多可有之躰二而
大地震之節四方遠近一円之出火二而中二も稲荷山宿并善光寺町之
方今今朝迄煙り相見江申候昨夜ゟ只今二至迄昼夜何重度となく
鳴震ひ中には壁も落候程二震動いたし且信州犀川之義儀川上ゟ二而山
崩致し候趣二而大地震之後は今に至江迄少も通行無之候二付一両日之
内二は何方ゟ一時二大出水可有と同川附ハ者共は勿論低場
之者共追々逃去候趣二御座候右異変二付此段御届申上候以上

昨二十四日夜四つ時（午後十時）頃、大地震により、松平飛騨守様の知行所である信州更級郡塩崎村、高二千九百石余の村において、潰れた家が千四、五百軒、怪我人が多く、即死者が六十人程おり、私どもの旅宿もまた震え潰れましたが、私ども並びに小者両人とも無事に立ち退き、伝馬御証文の義は持ち退いたため、別条はございません。誠に古今まれなる大地震であり、田畑ともども割れ、中には夥しく水を吹き出している場所もございます。塩崎村の御普請所については、堤の石積み等はおおかた崩れ落ち、千曲川については平常水より二、三丈も増水いたしましたが、私どもこれ以上の異変がなければ、格別の出水もないのではないかと存じます。これは塩崎村に限らず、近郷すべてにおいて潰れた家や怪我人等も多くあるようで、大地震の際には四方遠近一円に火事が起き、中でも稲荷山宿ならびに善光寺町の方は今朝まで煙が見えております。昨夜より只今に至るまで昼夜何十度となく鳴り揺れ、中には壁も落ちる程に震動し、かつ信州犀川については川上より山崩れが起きている由で、大地震の後は今に至るまで全く通行できないため、一両日のうちには何らかの方向から一時に大出水があるであろうと、同川沿いの者どもはもちろん、低地の者どもも次々と逃げ去っている様子でございます。以上の異変につき、この段御届け申し上げます。以上

There were occasional slight rumblings, but only minor tremors from time to time. Beyond that, crossing the Usui Pass toward Edo, there was only a considerable earthquake on the 24th, and thereafter it appears there have been no earthquakes. The above is a rough summary of the extraordinary events witnessed and heard during the course of official duties, as described in this letter. The details will be investigated and reported from each location in due course. Respectfully submitted.
3rd day of the 4th month, Year of the Sheep [1847]
On the night of the 24th of last month, around the Hour of the Boar (approximately 10 p.m.), a great earthquake struck the village of Shiozaki in Sarashina District, Shinano Province, a domain of approximately 2,900 koku belonging to Lord Matsudaira Hida-no-kami. Approximately 1,400 to 1,500 houses were destroyed, many were injured, and approximately 60 people died instantly. Our inn also collapsed in the earthquake, but both myself and our two servants escaped without injury, and as we were able to carry away the official post-horse documents, there are no further complications to report. This was truly a great earthquake of a kind rarely seen in history; both fields and paddies were rent open, and in some places a great quantity of water gushed forth. Regarding the construction works at Shiozaki village, the embankment stonework has mostly collapsed, and the Chikuma River rose two to three jō (approximately 6-9 meters) above its normal level. However, we believe that as long as there are no further extraordinary occurrences, there will likely be no exceptional flooding. Not only in Shiozaki village but throughout the surrounding area, there appear to be many collapsed houses and injured persons, and fires broke out in all directions near and far during the great earthquake. Among these, smoke from the direction of Inariyama-juku and Zenkōji-machi could still be seen as of this morning. From last night until this very moment, the ground has been shaking and rumbling dozens of times throughout the day and night, with tremors strong enough to bring down walls in some instances. Furthermore, regarding the Sai River in Shinano Province, it is reported that landslides have occurred upstream, and since the great earthquake, traffic has been completely cut off to this day. Thus, it is feared that at some point within the next day or two, a sudden great flood may occur from some direction, and residents along the river as well as those in low-lying areas have been fleeing one after another.
