The villages [in the administered territories] also experienced earthquakes similar to the above, but in the neighboring privately-held villages, there was only minor damage in various places, causing no significant disruption, and there were no injuries or deaths.
This matter is hereby reported without delay. Respectfully submitted.

Copy of the earthquake report submitted by Sanada Shinano-no-kami on the 26th day of the 3rd month and the 5th day of the 4th month, Kōka 4th year [1847], Year of the Ram
Item: At my home domain of Matsushiro in Shinano Province, a great earthquake struck from around the Hour of the Boar (approximately 10 p.m.) on the 24th, two days ago. Within the castle, residences, watchtowers, and surrounding walls sustained extensive damage. Among the residences of retainers, the castle town, villages within the domain, and other administered territories, there were numerous collapsed houses and many deaths. Fires broke out in some villages. Furthermore, in the mountain areas, landslides occurred and debris was pushed into the Sai River, causing water to gradually accumulate and fill up — needless to say, the river's flow has completely ceased. The ferry crossing at Tanbajima-juku on the Hokuoku Kaidō (Northern Province Highway) has run dry, and should the backed-up water break through, I cannot foresee what kind of catastrophic changes may occur. Moreover, earthquakes continue to occur from time to time even now. Further details will be reported in due course.
This matter is hereby urgently reported. Respectfully submitted.
26th day of the 3rd month The above report was submitted to Lord Toda Yamashiro-no-kami Sanada Shinano-no-kami
Item: Regarding the great earthquake that struck my home domain of Matsushiro in Shinano Province from the Hour of the Boar on the 24th of last month, as previously reported, the tremors have not ceased since then and continue at irregular intervals throughout the day and night — too many times to count. On the morning of the 29th and the evening of the last day of the month, there were two or three strong earthquakes on each of those days. The situation in distant villages is difficult to ascertain, but in the outer town areas of the castle town, there have been further collapsed houses, and large rocks have tumbled down in great numbers from the mountains in the surrounding area. Furthermore, I must urgently report that regarding the location where the Sai River has been dammed upstream: in the area of Anyū Village, Yamamoto, and Hirabayashi villages within Sarashina District, a high mountain called Iwakura has collapsed on both sides — one point over approximately thirty chō, and another point — (continued on next page)
