○ One should read the abridged text of the above official notice board every day without fail, observe its precepts, and reflect upon oneself morning and evening. If there is anything amiss, one should cease it immediately. Even a small act of goodness, when accumulated, becomes a great good; even a slight wrong, when repeated, becomes a great evil. Moreover, even if one has committed evil deeds in the past, if one reforms one's heart from this point forward and accumulates good deeds, how could that evil not be extinguished? If one does so, all calamities ordained by Heaven will be entirely dispelled, and happiness will come in return — one's household will grow rich and prosperous, and one's descendants will flourish. Of this, one must never have the slightest doubt. For further detail on matters of good and evil conduct, refer to the kana book entitled *Waji Kōka Jichiroku* ("A Self-Examination Record of Merits and Faults in Japanese Script"). Let people of all ages — old and young, men and women alike — read this work and teach it to even the youngest children, so that each may perform at least one good deed and refrain from at least one evil deed. If a child behaves poorly, it is because the parent's teaching is poor. If a retainer behaves poorly, it is because the master's admonishment is poor. Those in positions of authority must discipline themselves and thereafter instruct and guide those beneath them.
It is good to do what is right, even if only in imitation —
before long, one grows accustomed to it, and it becomes a true virtue.
