生月（いきつき）嶋（しまの）全圖
生月嶋（ いきつきしま）は平戸（ひらど）の属嶋（ぞくたう）にて。城邑（じやうか）より西のかたの沖中（おきなか）三里 許（ばかり）にあり。
南北三里許。東西卅町許にて。その形（かたち）狭（せば）く長き嶋なり。東南の
海は地方（ぢかた）に属（つき）て。浪もおだやかなれど。西北は遥（はるか）に朝鮮（てうせん）にさしむかひ。
溟渤（おほうみ）のかぎりしられず。岸（きし）は屏風（びやうぶ）を立（たて）たるごとく削（けづり）成（な）せるに。ともすれ
ば洪濤（おほなみ）いかめしくよせ来（く）る貌（さま）。おそろしさいふばかりなし。然（さ）れば舟（ふな）
がゝりの便（たより）もなく。人の住處（すみか）はた少（まれ）なり。東南の方によりて。舘浦（たちうら）。

生月島の全図
生月島は平戸の属島で、城下町より西の方の沖合い三里ほどにある。
南北三里ほど、東西三十町ほどで、その形は狭く長い島である。東南の
海は陸地に近く、波も穏やかであるが、西北は遥か朝鮮に向かい合い、
大海原の限りが知れない。岸は屏風を立てたように削り取られており、ともすれば
大波が激しく寄せ来る様子は、恐ろしさは言いようもない。そのため船の
停泊の便もなく、人の住居も少ない。東南の方に寄って、舘浦、
一部浦、御崎浦などその外の民家や、また船着き場もある。
この一部浦に益富又左衛門という、代々裕福な者が住んでいるが、篤実温厚な
評判がある。鯨を捕ることを生業とし、各地の漁場を指揮している。それは領
内の壱岐国の前目（冬二組、夏一組）、勝本（冬二組、春一組）、生月島の御崎（冬一組、春一組）、大村領
の江島（春一組、前目より移る）、五島領の板部（春一組、勝本より移る）、合わせて五箇所の漁場に
該当する組を出している。（平戸領内には、このほか小値賀島冬一組、津吉浦春一組の漁場があるが、益富の指揮ではない。冬組とは、小寒十日前より彼岸十日前
まで、下り鯨を捕ることをいう。春組とは、彼岸十日前より春土用明けて後二十日ほどの間、上り鯨を捕ることをいう。）その経営は容易でない仕事
で、富有の力でなくては、どうして費用を賄うことができようか。たとえ資金が足
りていても、その器量がなくては、どうして多数の漁人工人を統括する
ことができようか。今生月島を取り上げて絵詞に記したのは、この島はある中でも
城下町より近くて、事実を見もし聞きもし、かつ組主益富の居住
の地であるため、事がよく整っているからである。（図中西方に離れて遥かに見えるのは、五
島の島々である。また番岳とてあるのは、
異国船遠見の番所を据えて、昼夜見張りをする所である。）

Complete Map of Ikitsuki Island
Ikitsuki Island is a subordinate island of Hirado, located about three ri offshore to the west of the castle town.
It extends about three ri from north to south and about thirty chō from east to west, forming a narrow and long island. The eastern and southeastern
seas are close to land with calm waves, but the northwest faces distant Korea across
the vast ocean whose limits are unknown. The coast is carved like standing folding screens, and
the sight of great waves crashing violently against it is indescribably terrifying. Therefore, there are
no convenient harbors for ships, and few human dwellings. Toward the southeast, there are Tachi-ura,
Ichibu-ura, Misaki-ura, and other settlements, as well as some harbors.
In this Ichibu-ura lives Masutomi Matazaemon, a man from a generations-old wealthy family, who has a
reputation for being sincere and gentle. He makes whaling his livelihood and directs fishing operations at various locations. These are within the domain:
Maeme in Iki Province (two groups in winter, one in summer), Katsumoto (two groups in winter, one in spring), Misaki on Ikitsuki Island (one group in winter, one in spring), Enoshima in Ōmura domain
(one group in spring, moving from Maeme), and Itabe in Gotō domain (one group in spring, moving from Katsumoto) - a total of five fishing stations with
the corresponding groups deployed. (Within Hirado domain, there are also fishing grounds at Ojika Island with one winter group and Tsuyoshi-ura with one spring group, but these are not under Masutomi's direction. Winter groups refers to catching descending whales from ten days before Minor Cold until ten days before the equinox.
Spring groups refers to catching ascending whales from ten days before the equinox until about twenty days after the end of spring doyō.) This management is no easy task,
and without the power of wealth, how could one cover the expenses? Even if capital were
sufficient, without the proper capacity, how could one oversee the numerous
fishermen and craftsmen? The reason for taking up Ikitsuki Island and recording it in this illustrated text is that among all places, this island is
closest to the castle town, where one can see and hear the facts firsthand, and moreover it is the residence
of group leader Masutomi, so matters are well organized there. (What appears distant to the west in the map are the
islands of Gotō. Also, what is called Bandake
is where a lookout post for foreign ships is established, keeping watch day and night.)
