Report of rumors and investigations with attached drawings from Kawakami Kingoro, magistrate of Nakanojo in Shinano Province. Around the fourth hour of the night on March 24th, a great earthquake suddenly occurred. Most of the fortifications and earthen walls of the Nakanojo magistrate's office (jinya) collapsed from the shaking, but the buildings themselves suffered no particular damage. The villages under the magistrate's office were similarly affected, with eaves and other structures falling due to the tremors, but there were no collapsed houses or injured persons. Within the magistrate's compound, people set up temporary shelters in the courtyards, with no one residing in the main buildings. From that night until dawn, there were eighty to ninety tremors of various magnitudes. From the 25th until the end of the month, there were 150 tremors daily, or about 100, including five to six major earthquakes each day. From the first to the fifth of this month, the frequency decreased to thirty to forty tremors daily at longer intervals, but still included two to three major earthquakes each time, and the tremors continue even now. Many people in the villages are still sleeping outdoors.
1. In the administered territory within Minochi District, there are six villages where private houses have all collapsed and there are many deaths, but elsewhere there are mostly damaged areas. Inspection deputies have been dispatched, but the investigation has not yet been completed.
1. Within Minochi District in Matsushiro domain territory, there is a region called "Yamanaka," an area worth 30,000 koku. In those villages, the earthquake was particularly strong, with landslides in every village, all houses completely destroyed, and countless deaths. Below Minochi Bridge in the same district...
