此心はゆきひらいなばの守ににんじ
いなばのくにを知行してかの国へくだる
ときそのしる人むまのはなむけをせし
ときいつかへり給ふといへばまつ人あらば
やがてかえりこんとてかくよめりされ
どもわれをまつ人はあらじとそこ
しんにふまへたる歌なりいなばのやま
とはいなばのくにの山といふ事なり

百人一首絵抄 十六
この歌の心は、行平が因幡の守に任じられ、因幡の国を治めることとなって、その国へ下る時に、親しい人たちが餞別の宴を催した時のことである。いつ帰って来られるのかと尋ねられたので、私を待つ人があるならばすぐにでも帰って来ようと言って、このように詠んだのである。しかし、私を待つ人はいないだろうと心中に思っていた歌なのである。因幡の山とは、因幡の国の山という意味である。

The spirit of this poem is as follows: When Yukihira was appointed as Governor of Inaba and was to govern that province, he traveled down to that country. At that time, his acquaintances held a farewell banquet for him. When asked when he would return, he said that if there were people waiting for him, he would return immediately, and composed this poem. However, it was a poem that harbored the true feeling that there would probably be no one waiting for him. "Inaba no yama" means the mountains of Inaba Province.
