そもそも、混沌がすでに分かれて、気の中で軽く浮かぶものは上にあって天となり、重く濁ったものは下にあって地となり、気の変化によってその中間に命を受けたものは人となった。すでに天地があれば、必ず人があり、人があれば、禽獣・草木・砂石・灰塵に至るまで、存在しないものはない。およそ人の生は正気を得たものであり、禽獣の生は偏った気を得たものであり、草木にはそれぞれの区別があり、砂石・灰塵は微細なものである。それぞれにその性質があるのだ。さらにそれらが変動するものに至っては、広大として、その理を尽く窮めることはできない。それゆえ、世の中の迂遠にして隠昧な…（続く）

Preface to "Heishoku Wakumon Chin" (Candlelit Questions and Answers: Curiosities)
In the beginning, when chaos had already divided, those elements of qi that were light and floating rose upward to become Heaven, while those that were heavy and turbid sank downward to become Earth, and those that received their life-mandate in the space between through the transformation of qi became Humanity. Once Heaven and Earth existed, there necessarily came to be humans; and with humans, there came to be birds and beasts, grasses and trees, sand and stone, ash and dust — there is nothing that does not exist. Among these, the life of humans is that which received the upright/correct qi; beasts and birds are those which received partial/biased qi; grasses and trees have their own distinctions; sand, stone, ash, and dust are the minute and fine things. Each has its own nature. As for those things that undergo transformation and movement, they are so vast and boundless that one cannot exhaustively fathom their principles.
