（酒甕を）乾かすこともあるだろう。これは稀にある事である。また、俗説に「虹が垂れる家には必ず凶事がある」というが、虹が至った所に吉凶があるはずがない。昔、ある一人の民がいた。常日頃の行いが悪く、近所の人からも憎まれていたが、ある時、官吏より公用の事があって呼びに来ることがあった。彼は心の中で思うには、「自分の日頃の悪事が役所に知れて、罪を糺すために召されるのに違いない」と大いに恐れたが、断ることもできず奉行所へ行った。しかし、言葉もたどたどしく、その様子がどことなく怪しく見えたため、奉行もまず公用を差し置いて、その言葉の不審なるを正したところ、悪事が明らかになり、ついに罪に堕ちたということだ。この官吏は別の公用で呼んだのだったが、その者自身が積み重ねた悪事が心に後ろめたくあったために、自ら罪を顕してしまったのである。それゆえ、虹気の至る所が悪人の家であれば、

Furthermore, there is a popular belief that "a house over which a rainbow hangs will surely suffer misfortune," but there is no reason why good or bad fortune should be determined by where a rainbow reaches. Long ago, there was a certain commoner whose conduct was habitually bad, and who was despised by the people of his village. One day, an official came to summon him on a matter of public business. The man thought to himself, "Surely my misdeeds have become known to the authorities, and I am being called in to have my crimes investigated," and he was greatly frightened. Unable to refuse, he went to the magistrate's office. However, his speech was halting and hesitant, and his manner appeared somehow suspicious. Therefore, the magistrate, setting aside the original official business, questioned him about the suspicious nature of his words, whereupon his evil deeds were exposed, and he ultimately fell into punishment. The official had summoned him for an entirely different matter of public business, but because the man's own accumulated wrongdoings weighed upon his conscience, he brought his own crimes to light.
