現代語訳
不思議なことを書き記した書物に、昔、誠中という場所で、陸国賓という道士が舟に乗って川を渡る時、白い虹が水と石の間にかかっていた。不思議に思って近寄って見ると、竹の子笠ほどの大きさのヒキガエルが口から気を吐き出しているのであった。あまりの不思議さにさらに近くに寄って見ようとしたところ、ヒキガエルは驚いて跳ねて水中に飛び込んでしまった。その時、たちまち虹も消えた、と記されている。しかし、どうしてそのようなことがあろうか。ヒキガエルがいた辺りから虹が起っているのを見て思い違いをしたのか、あるいは虹が消えるちょうどその折に、ヒキガエルが水中に飛び込んだのであろう。また、『淮南子』や『異苑』などに載せられているような、酒宴の場所に虹が垂れて酒を吸ったというような類の話は、皆、迂遠で妄誕な説であって、取り上げるに値しない。太陽の光がたまたま酒のある場所へ、黒雲に厳しく包まれながら至ったならば、その水気を吸い上げて瓶（かめ）を……

In a book recording strange and wondrous events, it is written that long ago, at a place called Seichū, a Taoist priest named Riku Kokuhin was crossing a river by boat when a white rainbow straddled the space between the water and the rocks. Finding this strange, he drew closer to look, and found that a toad as large as a bamboo-shoot hat was exhaling breath from its mouth. Thinking it all the more strange, he tried to approach even closer, whereupon the toad, startled, leaped and plunged into the water. At that very moment, the rainbow also disappeared, so it is recorded. Yet how could such a thing truly be? Perhaps he saw the rainbow rising from the vicinity where the toad happened to be sitting and mistook the cause; or perhaps the toad jumped into the water at precisely the moment the rainbow faded. Furthermore, stories such as those found in the *Huainanzi* and *Yiyuan* — claiming that a rainbow descended upon a place where wine was being served and sucked up the wine — are all fanciful and absurd theories not worthy of serious consideration.
