対曰凡五行の色をいふ時は木は《ルビ：青｜アヲ》く火は《ルビ：赤｜アカ》く
土は《ルビ：黄｜キ》に金は《ルビ：白｜シロ》く水は《ルビ：黒｜クロ》し然れは雪も水成に
よつて色の黒かるべきに白は是母の色なり母の色と
云は其生ずる本を母といふ《ルビ：仮令｜タトヘバ》《ルビ：木生火｜モクセウクワ》とて
《ルビ：錐｜キリ》をもつて木を《ルビ：揉｜モム》時は火出る也故に火の母を

（前ページより続き）これは豊年の瑞兆とも言えよう。雪といえども雨と異なることはない。ただ集まって降るか、散って降るかの違いのみである。
また問う：雪の色が白いのはどういうことか。
答えて曰く：そもそも五行の色について言えば、木は青く、火は赤く、土は黄色で、金は白く、水は黒い。それならば雪も水であるから色は黒くあるべきなのに、白いのは、これは「母の色」である。母の色というのは、その物を生み出す根本を「母」と呼ぶことによる。たとえば「木生火」といって、錐を使って木を揉むと火が出る。それゆえ火の母を木とする。火が燃えている中に必ず青い部分があり、また灯火の根元も色が青い。これが母の色である。次に「火生土」といって、万物は皆、火に焼かれて土となる。ゆえに土の母を火とする。土の色は黄色であるが、赤土があるのは、これが母の色（火の赤）を表しているのである。金は土より生じる。ゆえに金の母を土とする。金は色が白いものであるが、母である土の色を表して黄金がある。また「金生水」といって、水は地中の金より生じる。ゆえに水の母を

Further question: Why is the color of snow white?
Answer: Generally speaking, when we discuss the colors of the Five Elements, wood is blue-green, fire is red, earth is yellow, metal is white, and water is black. If that is so, since snow is water, its color ought to be black — yet it is white. This is because it takes the color of its "mother." The "color of the mother" refers to the origin from which something is generated, which is called the "mother." For example, according to the principle of "wood generates fire" (木生火), when one rubs wood with a drill, fire is produced. Therefore, the mother of fire is wood. Within burning flame, there is always a blue-green portion, and likewise the base of a lamp flame is also blue-green in color. This is the color of the mother. Next, according to the principle of "fire generates earth" (火生土), all things are burned by fire and become earth. Therefore, the mother of earth is fire. Although the color of earth is yellow, red clay exists because it manifests the color of its mother (the red of fire). Metal is generated from earth, so the mother of metal is earth. Although metal is inherently white, yellow gold exists because it manifests the color of its mother, earth. Furthermore, according to the principle of "metal generates water" (金生水), water is generated from metal within the ground. Therefore, the mother of water is —
