Leaf shape is elongated like monkshood or hemp leaves. Leaves come in large and small sizes. Large ones are over one shaku. Stems are long, leaf edges are pointed, and some have serrations while others don't.
However, the form is refreshing. Flowers are yellowish-white with deep purple brilliance at the bottom. The center core is the same as hibiscus. Flowers have a sac covering, with five platforms entangling outside. Though called autumn mallow, it blooms from summer's dog days through July and August. Height is about six to seven shaku. ○There are many types of mallow. Yellow-flowered ones are called Shu-ki. Small-flowered ones are called money mallow or Chinese mallow. Red-flowered ones are called crimson mallow. ○Leans toward the sun. ○Yu Xi says: Yellow hibiscus exists everywhere in nearby regions. Springs forth seedlings in spring, leaves quite resemble hibiscus but are pointed, small with many notches. Opens flowers at summer's end, light yellow color. Harvest in June-July and dry in shade. ○Zong Shi says: Yellow hibiscus and hibiscus are different species, not the yellow variety among hibiscus. Below the leaf center is purple sandalwood color. Pick and scatter to dry in sun.
