元禄（げんろく）延宝（ゑんほう）の春（はる）狂言（きやうげん）より此種（たね）を植（うへ）て栢莚（はくゑん）納子（とつし）【正しくは訥子で澤村訥子のこと。屋号紀伊国屋】
に至て花咲（はなさき）実結（ミ のり）少長（せうてう）定花（ぢやうくわ）に枝葉茂て
当時（とうじ）紀（き）の国（くに）屋｜瀧（たき）野屋の世界（せかい）とはなりぬる此
絵草子（ゑそうし）のをもむきは芝居（しばい）の趣向（しゆかう）と一盃か以て
おかしみ半ふん浮世（うきよ）が粒（づふ）安目（やすめ）を売（うる）気（き）の
版元のねがひ巳（ミ ）の初春（はつはる）の商始（あきないはじめ）と
歌｜舞（ふ）伎（き）の作者（さくしや）にあやまつて申す

清長画
年々歳々花相似たり、歳々年々曽我同じからず
元禄・延宝の春狂言よりこの種を植えて、柏莚納子（澤村訥子のこと、屋号紀伊国屋）に至って花咲き実結び、少長定花に枝葉茂って、当時紀伊国屋・瀧野屋の世界となりぬる。この絵草子の趣は、芝居の趣向と一杯飲みながら、おかしみ半分浮世絵粒（つぶ）安めを売る気の版元の願い。巳の初春の商い始めとして、歌舞伎の作者に謹んで申し上げる。

Year after year the flowers look the same, but year after year the Soga [stories] are never identical.
From the spring kyōgen plays of the Genroku and Enpō eras, this seed was planted, and by the time of Hakuen Tosshi (referring to Sawamura Tosshi, with the stage name house Kii-no-kuni-ya), it bloomed and bore fruit. With branches and leaves flourishing in the roles of young men and leading actors, it has now become the world of Kii-no-kuni-ya and Takino-ya theaters. The intent of this illustrated storybook is the publisher's wish to sell affordable entertainment and ukiyo-e "grains" with half the humor of theatrical plots, enjoyed over a drink. As the beginning of business in the first spring of the Snake year, I humbly present this to the kabuki playwrights.
