【祐常の敬称は鬼王の台詞の途中に「祐つねさま」と平仮名で書かれており、その続きで漢字もつかわれている。漢字は殿のくずし時にも似ているが、話者が同じなのに途中で敬称が変わるのもおかしいので、「さ満」を合字的にくっつけて書いているものと解釈し「さま」とした。】
現代語訳
年々歳々筆をとってかくも久しいものの、寛久四年のあけたつ春の君が代は、法度がたくさんの麻上下もめでたく、たたんで裾吹く小松とかわれども、変わらぬものは曽我の恨み。父の仇は工藤左衛門尉と知ってはいるけれども、天下に誰も並ぶ者なく威光強ければ、討つことはさておき、顔を見知ることもならずしてしまえば、ならぬと月日を送るも本意ではないと、二人の家来、鬼王新左衛門は話すように兄弟へ教訓を教える。
【鬼王の台詞】
これ若殿方、あなた達は今の世に四角文字（学問）ばかり読んで、父の仇には共に天を戴かずと申す由来は知れたこと。それよりは草紙でも見たりとかくて手短に、祐経様へ取り入る方法を工夫しましょう。第一には敵の面体を見覚えるため、明日十日は箱根山権現へ頼朝公が御参詣なされば、諸大名は言うに及ばず、敵祐経様もお出でになるは必定。頼朝公還御の後で祐経様の帰りを待って、絵を大いにお覚えなさりませ。
【曽我兄弟の台詞】
でかした鬼王、日頃俺もそう思う。明日の参詣こそよき幸いなり。祐経殿へは沙汰なしに行くほどに、待機しながらそなたも一緒に来てくれ。
これからは野暮らしく敵討ちの沙汰をやめて、八幡の三郎へ頼み、祐経へ取り入り、気を緩ませてしっかりと動きのないように本望を遂げる肝心さ。
英語訳
Year after year taking up the brush to write this long-standing story, in the spring of the fourth year of Kankyū when the new year dawns, though the sovereign's reign has many regulations and even the ceremonial hemp dress is auspiciously folded away like the small pine trees swaying in the wind, what remains unchanged is the Soga brothers' resentment. Though they know their father's enemy is Kudō Saemon-no-jō, since no one in the realm can match his威光 (power and influence), rather than attempting to strike him down immediately, they cannot even catch sight of his face. If this continues, spending days and months would not fulfill their true intention, so their retainer Kiō Shinzaemon teaches the brothers a lesson as if telling a story.
【Kiō's speech】
Listen, young masters, you spend your time in this world only reading books and studying literature, but you well know the principle that one cannot share the same heaven with one's father's enemy. Rather than just reading storybooks, let us quickly devise a way to gain access to Suketsune-sama. First, to memorize the enemy's appearance: tomorrow, the 10th, when Yoritomo-kō makes his pilgrimage to Hakone-yama Gongen shrine, not only will all the great lords attend, but our enemy Suketsune-sama will surely appear as well. After Yoritomo-kō's return, we shall wait for Suketsune-sama's departure and you must carefully memorize his features.
【The Soga brothers' speech】
Well done, Kiō! I too have been thinking the same thing daily. Tomorrow's pilgrimage is indeed a fortunate opportunity. Since we go to Suketsune's presence without prior notice, while waiting, you must come with us as well.
From now on, we shall cease this crude talk of revenge and instead rely on Hachiman no Saburō, gain Suketsune's trust, make him lower his guard, and ensure he remains motionless so we can accomplish our heart's desire with certainty.
