現代語訳
小林勝頼は元来八幡に初めて会うにあたり、「わざわざと大いそぎで来てもらおう」ということで、今日は中の町の近江屋にて昼より三人で八幡が来るのを待っていたところ、程なく来たので、みな揃って改まって嘘を交えて話し出す。
朝比奈「お早うございました。かの御話し申した人はこれにおります。貧乏神の兄弟ははなはだ不器用者ゆえ、末永く御目をかけられて、おって大守様へもお目見えをいたしたい、大変な心願でございます。長々とこの席で申し上げるのも野暮なき、ただ今朝比奈先生の申し上げました通り、真の芋掘りでございますれば、何分よろしく願い奉ります。」
八幡「これはこれは御三人様の御丁寧な御挨拶、まことに恐れ入ります。このような席で一度お手合い申せば百度にも増すお心安さ。何もかもおっくるめて小内の事なれば、いざいくっとのみこみさ。」
女「助さんはいつもと違い四角だね。もし朝さん、舞鶴さんと花川さんはお仕舞い申して置きました。虎さんは知れたこと、もうお出なんしな。」
朝比奈「なるほど三つ指で爪開きも変ちきだ。八幡さんもう行きやしょう。案内の女房先へ立ちねえ、俺にはまた新造をあてがうのか。」
英語訳
Kobayashi Katsuyori, meeting Hachiman for the first time, had said "Please come with great haste," so today at the Ōmiya inn in Naka-no-chō, the three of them waited from noon for Hachiman to arrive. When he came shortly after, they all gathered formally and began to speak, mixing truth with fiction.
Asahina: "Thank you for coming so early. The person I spoke to you about is here. These brothers are like gods of poverty and are quite clumsy fellows, so we hope you will look after them for a long time to come, and eventually they would like an audience with the great lord - this is their earnest wish. It would be boorish to speak at length in this setting, but just as Master Asahina has stated, this is a matter of genuine potato digging, so please look favorably upon our request."
Hachiman: "Well, well, such polite greetings from you three gentlemen - I am truly honored. Having met once in such circumstances, our familiarity will increase a hundredfold. Since everything is encompassed within our small circle of affairs, come now, let us drink heartily."
Woman: "Suke-san seems more serious than usual today. Oh, Asa-san, I've finished with Maituru-san and Hanakawa-san. As for Tora-san, that's obvious - he should come out now."
Asahina: "Indeed, the three-finger nail-spreading gesture is quite strange. Hachiman-san, let's go now. Guide woman, go ahead - are you going to assign me another courtesan?"
