現代語訳
上を下への大騒ぎで、栄東山の花見、かなのほっ句はとこやらのことにして、ここは相州箱根権現へ例年の吉例として源頼朝公が御参詣ありて、還御も相済んだので、跡固めは新開の荒四郎として、菖蒲ヶ原の足軽大勢列をただして守りしている中を、大名おいおい下山。その内に敵工藤左衛門尉は、当時鎌倉の［要職］なれば、己が威光を押し立てて烏帽子を悠然として出で来るを、兄方をはじめ鬼王も歯噛みをなして無念がる。
「あの庵に木香の紋をつけたのが祐経様です。御二人様、よく御覧なさりませ。これからは朝比奈様を御頼み申して八幡様へ言い込んでもらい、早く勝手通りにさえなれば、敵討ちは手近になります。こんなことは早いがよいのです。」
「さっき、とんとんと案では話した通り、小林殿の内へ帰りに行こう。」

In great commotion with everything turned upside down, treating the cherry blossom viewing at Mount Eitō and the kana verse composition as matters for elsewhere, here at Hakone Gongen in Sagami Province, following the annual auspicious custom, Lord Minamoto no Yoritomo has completed his pilgrimage and his return journey as well. The rear guard, led by Arashirō of Shinkai, maintains order with a large force of foot soldiers lined up at Shōbu-ga-hara, and as the great lords descend the mountain one by one, among them the enemy Kudō Saemon-no-jō, who currently holds high office in Kamakura, emerges with his court cap worn majestically, flaunting his own authority. Seeing this, the elder brother and Kiō grind their teeth in frustration and resentment.
"That one with the mokko crest on his canopy-like insignia is Lord Suketsune. You two masters, observe him well. From now on, we shall request Lord Asahina's assistance and have him put in a good word with Lord Hachiman. Once we can move freely as we wish, our revenge will be within reach. Such matters are better handled swiftly."
"Just as we discussed in our plan earlier with all the details, let us go to Lord Kobayashi's residence on our way back."
