【右丁】
民家は踊り上がって喜び、頂戴して仮の茅の芽で結んだ庵に帰り、まず尊像を安置した。いわゆる夕顔観音と呼ばれるのはこのためである。俗に瓠の花を夕顔花と称するのは、夕陽が巻くころに至って開花するからである。弾正忠は、もと高遠に封ぜられていたが、事あって左遷され多刧に居住していた。常にこの尊像を信敬していたので、感応がしばしばあった。弾正忠が讒言により白屋に終わることを深く大士の像前で祈り思っていると、たちまち霊夢を感じ、やがて赦しを得て再び高遠に還ることができた。ついにこの地に寺を建て、その名を樹林寺と称したのは、その本根を忘れないためである。そこで名工に命じて多刧の夕顔観音尊像を写させ、これを安置し、併せて肥沃な田三十石並びに山林を寄附して仏供の資とした。時は慶長六年辛丑の歳である。後に弾正忠は旨を受けて会津に移居し、鳥居主膳正忠春をして高遠を領せしめた。忠春の卒後、嫡子左京亮忠剛が家督を継いで高遠を領した。忠春・忠剛の二代にわたって観音を信仰し、山林等は保科氏の寄附の例に任せていた。忠剛が時々この寺に詣でると、年代が深く遠く、堂の外観がかなり敗壊していた。忠剛は咨嗟大息し、ついに材を聚め工を鳩めて造営した。たちまちのうちに壮麗厳飾が成り、山林を照映した。

そもそも一花一草を献仏しても無量の福を獲る、まして堂殿を修造して荘厳するならばなおさらである。ただ参礼者をして善因を種まかせるのみならず、自らも福恵を増し、また大士が常に冥護を加えて、その苦厄を永く離れさせるのである。国人がこの由来を知らないので、家臣高須氏がしきりに予に記すことを要請し、道俗に示そうとした。因って筆を染めて以て責めを塞ぐと云爾。

The family rejoiced greatly, received the image reverently, and returned to a temporary hermitage built with thatched sprouts, where they first enshrined the sacred image. This is why it came to be called the Yūgao Kannon. The bottle gourd flower is commonly called the yūgao flower because it blooms when evening approaches. Danjō-chū was originally enfeoffed at Takato, but due to certain circumstances was demoted and resided in Takō. Since he constantly believed in and revered this sacred image, there were frequent miraculous responses. When Danjō-chū deeply prayed before the image of Daishi about ending his exile due to slander, he suddenly experienced a divine dream, and before long received a pardon and was able to return to Takato again. He finally built a temple on this site and called it Jurinji so as not to forget its original roots. He then commissioned a master craftsman to copy the Yūgao Kannon sacred image from Takō, enshrined it there, and additionally donated thirty koku of fertile rice fields along with mountain forests to provide resources for Buddhist offerings. This was in the year Keichō 6, the year of the Metal Ox (1601). Later, Danjō-chū received orders to relocate to Aizu, and had Torii Shuzen-sho Tadaharu govern Takato. After Tadaharu's death, his eldest son Sakyō-no-suke Tadataka inherited the headship and governed Takato. Through the two generations of Tadaharu and Tadataka, they maintained faith in Kannon, and the mountain forests continued according to the precedent of the Hoshina family's donations. When Tadataka occasionally visited this temple, due to the passage of many years, the temple hall's exterior had considerably deteriorated. Tadataka sighed deeply and finally gathered materials and workers to reconstruct it. In no time, magnificent and solemn decorations were completed, illuminating the mountain forests.

Indeed, even offering a single flower or blade of grass to Buddha brings immeasurable merit, how much more so when constructing and adorning temple halls. Not only does this cause worshippers to plant seeds of good karma, but one also increases one's own blessings and merit, and moreover Daishi constantly provides invisible protection, enabling one to permanently escape from suffering and misfortune. Because the people of the domain did not know this history, the retainer Takasu repeatedly requested that I record it to show both clergy and laypeople. Therefore, I take up the brush to fulfill this responsibility.
