とりのそらねをつくりはかりいつはりまことの関
をばとほる共世の中の男女のこひぢの関を

この歌の心は、中国の孟嘗君という人が、夜深く関所を通ろうとして、鶏の鳴き声を真似したところ、関守が本当の鶏の声と思い、夜が明けたと思って関所を開けて通したという故事を引用して詠んだ歌である。今そのように鶏の偽の鳴き声を作って騙し、本当の関所は通ることができても、この世の男女の恋路の関所は、なかなか容易には越えがたいという心である。

The meaning of this poem draws upon the Chinese story of Mengchang Jun, who late at night tried to pass through a checkpoint by imitating the crow of a rooster. The gatekeeper, thinking it was a real rooster's call and that dawn had broken, opened the gate and let him pass. This poem references this historical tale. Though one might create false bird calls to deceive and pass through a real checkpoint, the barrier of love between men and women in this world is not so easily crossed.
