現代語訳
ここに酒と商売をしていた伊勢屋徳右衛門という者がいた。最近になって、だんだん身上を上げ始め、国元から年季奉公の子供を二人呼び寄せ、得意先を回らせて日々商売をしていた。
これを見て徳吉の目を覚まさせ、「私も幸介と一緒に湯にでも行ってこい。あの御日の御様子を見て参れ。」
「あれこ□□□□□幸助も徳吉同じ□□□こう（？）だが、幸介は毎日湯に行っても、髪も少しも手入れをしない。」
先に催促して行きますと、徳吉は襟も耳も真っ黒にして、ただ居眠りが得意なだけだった。

「もし旦那様、ちょっと湯に行って、身体でも洗って参りますか。」
英語訳
Here there was a man called Ise-ya Tokuzaemon who dealt in sake and commerce. Recently, he had gradually begun to improve his fortune and called two apprentice children from his home province to make rounds of his customers and conduct business daily.
Seeing this, [someone] tried to wake up Tokukichi, saying "I too should go to the bathhouse with Kosuke. Go and observe the situation there."
"Although both Kosuke and Tokukichi are the same [...], Kosuke doesn't take care of his hair at all even though he goes to the bathhouse every day."
When urged to go first, Tokukichi went with his collar and ears completely black, only skilled at dozing off.
