先月27日の大地震は、貴地方ではいかがでしたでしょうか。心配のあまり、取り急ぎ葉書を差し上げ、ご様子をお伺いいたします。その後の風評によりますと、今度の地震は東海道が最も強い震動で、特に美濃・尾張および当遠江の三か国が地震の中心であり、他の地域はそれほどでもなく、中国・九州方面はわずかに微震程度とのことを聞き、安心いたしました。
追々新聞紙や官報等でご承知の通り、美濃・尾張の惨状は到底紙上で尽くせるものではありません。地震当日、現地にいて目撃した友人の直話によれば、美濃の岐阜・大垣などは震動と家屋の倒壊がほとんど同時のようで、避難する暇がなく、例えば大垣裁判所の検事の一家が残らず死亡したり、郡長の家族が皆圧死したりと、いずれも逃げる暇がなかったことに起因するとのことです。岐阜市中・大垣市中はほとんど9分通り、尾張も名古屋市の過半が、倒壊家屋の有様は将棋倒しのようでした。

当遠江各地方については、東京・大阪方面の評判では名古屋同様の震害を受けたかのように言い触らされているとのことで、東京・大阪方面の友人その他から盛んに見舞いの手紙を受け、一々返事をするのに閉口するほどです。実際は評判ほどではなく、浜松市中は一軒も倒壊家屋はありません。もっとも多少の災害は免れませんでしたが、死亡者は近在に少々いた程度でございます。
私の住居は官舎で、家屋の構造が堅固なためか、格別の破損はなく、ただ少々の器具が転倒破損した程度でございます。しかし当地方も27日以来毎日毎夜数回ずつの震動は止まず、昨夜まではときどき震動がありました。そのため数千の人民が穏やかでありません。ただこの際の僥倖は、当時の旅人の存在のみです。西行汽車が全通しないため、一時浜松に停滞する旅客が夥しく、旅人宿が大繁盛です。これに次ぐのは人力車夫です。
しかし昨夜深夜に非常な大雨と雷鳴があり、今朝は晴天となり、最早震動もないでしょうと私は推測いたします。

How was your area affected by the great earthquake of the 27th of last month? Out of great concern, I hastily send this postcard to inquire about your situation. According to subsequent rumors, this earthquake was strongest along the Tōkaidō, particularly in the three provinces of Mino, Owari, and our Tōtōmi, which were at the epicenter. Other regions were not so severely affected, and I heard that areas like Chūgoku and Kyūshū experienced only slight tremors, which relieved me.
As you will gradually learn from newspapers and official reports, the devastation in Mino and Owari cannot possibly be fully described on paper. According to direct accounts from a friend who was there and witnessed the earthquake firsthand, in places like Gifu and Ōgaki in Mino, the tremors and house collapses occurred almost simultaneously, leaving no time for evacuation. For example, an entire family of a prosecutor at Ōgaki Court died, and a district head's entire household was crushed to death - all due to having no time to escape. Both Gifu city and Ōgaki city were about 90% destroyed, and in Owari, more than half of Nagoya city collapsed like dominoes.
Since the 27th, there have been dozens of strong and weak tremors every day and night. However, in our region too, several tremors continue day and night since the 27th, and there were occasional tremors until last night. This has left thousands of people uneasy. The only stroke of luck at this time is the presence of travelers. Because westbound trains are not fully operational, many passengers are temporarily stranded in Hamamatsu, bringing great prosperity to inns. Next in benefit are the rickshaw pullers.
