夜毎にも下に焚火（たきび）は なけれども四方根（よもね）の真（ま）
湯の たゆるともなしと 堀川百首によみゐひし
当温泉は窈窕（ようてう）として 川の左右にあり東に
水晶山。阿野山を望み西は澤渡草津温泉迄
峯つゞきなり 此は日向山。小倉山を麓（ふもと）にして 峨（が）々
たる大山をへだて 越後の国に境迄南は原町
中の条駅迄 谷につらなりて折【節？】曝布（ばくふ）ところ〳〵
に引はへて眼下（がんか）に吾妻川の長流をひかへ さすがに
捨がたき山の姿なりけり 柳ノ沸湯（わきゆ）の源はそのかみ
ふるきころ 沼田の城基 真田伊賀守公 此地の領主（りやうしゆ）
たりしに湯本 某に分ち與へ浴室（よくしつ）を作らせし
よりひらけそめ後 寛文（くわんぶん）の度 公の御聞に達し
温泉の高札を改め 猶（なほ） 維新（いしん）の際（さい）全国鉱泉の
湯質経験（とうしつけいけん）あかしより都鄙（とひ）遠近の老若四時
のわかちなく袖をつらねて来る往々年月
の移り行まゝに 家栄軒睦（いへさかへのきむつ）みて歴然（れきせん）たり
もとより蒸湯の大切 滝湯の妙利〔功能

木あり 凡そ千年も経たるならん枝葉
生茂りて森（しん）々とならし 産物には蕨（わらひ）独
活｜椎茸（しゐたけ）舞たけ 岩茸治菌 湯晒艾など
土産に買はせ其外 北越より魚鼈（ぎよべつ）来り
渓（たに）を隔て米穀を運（はこ）びて 更に幽崖窮谷（いうがゐきうこく）に
はあらじ その群集（ぐわんしゆう）の旅客の湯労れをなぐ
さめんには芸妓といふものありていとたけの
曲をあげ また其｜粧（よそほ）ひ 美なり 艶（ゑん）なり 声は
鴬の吟より細く 髪に梅花の薫（かほ）りを含みて
雪の肌（はだ）へに紅（くれない）の袖をひらめかす風情みるに
たへがたくなんありける 殊更の繁花霊泉（はんくわれいせん）の
功多少（くわうたせう）の病客根治（びやうかくこんぢ）せんといふことなし 湯壺（ゆつほ）
きよらかにして 塩気（しをけ）をもち よく茶に
あふといへり 日の本のと呼（よば）れし但馬木の崎
の温泉も上に立んことかたしと 歌川何がし
の書 残されしもむべなるかな 病ひの癒（いゆ）

四方之賦
夜ごとにも下に焚火はないけれども、四万の真湯が絶えることはないと、堀川百首に詠まれている。
当温泉は美しく川の左右にあり、東に水晶山・阿野山を望み、西は沢渡・草津温泉まで峰続きである。これは日向山・小倉山を麓にして、険しくそびえる大山を隔て、越後の国境まで。南は原町中の条駅まで谷に連なって、折々滝が各所にかかり、眼下に吾妻川の長い流れを控え、さすがに捨てがたい山の姿である。
柳湯の源は、その昔古い頃、沼田城主真田伊賀守公がこの地の領主であった時に、湯本の某に分け与え浴室を作らせてから開けはじめた。後に寛文年間に公の御聞に達し、温泉の高札を改め、なお維新の際、全国鉱泉の湯質調査によって都市や田舎、遠近の老若を問わず四季を通じて袖を連ねて来る。年月の移り行くままに家も栄え睦まじくて繁栄している。
もとより蒸湯の効能、滝湯の妙効【効能概略：慢性皮膚病（疥癬・ノルウェー疥癬）、頑固なリウマチ、古い挫傷によって生じる手足の麻痺、神経痛、胸の張り・胸痛、消化不良、血の不足、肝臓病、便秘の癖がある者、神経痛】その他もろもろの病いを救う。
ここから十丁余りで瑠璃殿に薬師仏を安置し、太い柱を立て温泉神社が鎮座している。傍らに牛を返すほどの古木があり、およそ千年も経ったであろう。枝葉が生い茂って森々としている。産物には蕨、独活、椎茸、舞茸、岩茸、茸菌、湯晒艾などを土産に買わせ、その他北越より魚介類が来り、谷を隔てて米穀を運んで、決して幽崖窮谷ではない。
その群集の旅客の湯疲れを慰めるには芸妓というものがあって、たいそう上手な曲を歌い、またその装いは美しく艶やかで、声は鶯の鳴き声より細やかで、髪に梅花の香りを含んで、雪のような肌に紅の袖をひらめかす風情は見るに堪えがたいほどである。
特に繁華な霊泉の効能で、多少の病客で根治しないということはない。湯壺は清らかで塩気を持ち、よく茶に合うと言われる。日本一と呼ばれた但馬城崎の温泉も上に立つことは難しいと、歌川某の書き残したのももっともである。
病いの癒える理由を自ら感じて十ヶ所のあらましを書き記し、硯の墨尽きて筆を止める。

Ode to the Four Directions
Though there are no bonfires lit below each night, the true hot spring waters of Shima never cease to flow, as sung in the Horikawa Hyakushu collection.
This hot spring is beautifully situated on both sides of the river. To the east, one can see Mount Suisho and Mount Ano, while to the west, mountain ridges continue to Sawatari and Kusatsu hot springs. With Mount Hinata and Mount Ogura at the foothills, separated by towering great mountains extending to the border of Echigo Province, and to the south connecting through valleys to Haramachi Nakanojo Station, with waterfalls cascading here and there, and the long flow of the Agatsuma River below, this is indeed a mountain landscape too beautiful to abandon.
The source of Yanagi hot spring dates back to ancient times when Lord Sanada Iganomorti, castle lord of Numata and ruler of this land, granted it to a certain person at the hot spring source and had bathing facilities built, from which time it began to flourish. Later, during the Kanbun era, it reached the lord's attention, and the hot spring notice board was renewed. Furthermore, during the Meiji Restoration, through nationwide surveys of mineral spring water quality, people of all ages from cities and countryside, near and far, come in all four seasons. As years and months pass, households prosper and live harmoniously.
The great benefits of steam baths and the marvelous effects of waterfall baths [Summary of benefits: chronic skin diseases (scabies, Norwegian scabies), stubborn rheumatism, paralysis of hands and feet caused by old injuries, neuralgia, chest tightness and chest pain, indigestion, blood deficiency, liver disease, those with chronic constipation, neuralgia] cure various other ailments.
About ten cho from here, Yakushi Buddha is enshrined in the Ruri Hall, with thick pillars erected and the Hot Spring Shrine seated. Nearby stands an ancient tree so large that oxen could turn around it, probably about a thousand years old, with branches and leaves growing thickly in deep forest. Local products include bracken, Japanese spikenard, shiitake mushrooms, maitake mushrooms, rock mushrooms, mushroom fungi, and hot spring-processed mugwort for souvenirs. Additionally, seafood comes from Hokuriku, and rice and grain are transported across valleys, so this is certainly not a remote canyon.
To comfort the hot spring fatigue of the crowds of travelers, there are geishas who sing very skillfully, and their appearance is beautiful and glamorous. Their voices are finer than the warbler's song, their hair contains the fragrance of plum blossoms, and the sight of their crimson sleeves fluttering against snow-white skin is almost unbearably captivating.
Especially with this prosperous sacred spring's effects, there are no patients, regardless of the severity of their condition, who do not achieve complete recovery. The hot spring pools are pure and contain salt, and are said to go well with tea. Even the hot springs of Kinosaki in Tajima, called the best in Japan, would find it difficult to surpass this, as written and left by a certain Utagawa. This is indeed reasonable.
Feeling for myself the reason why illnesses are cured, I write an outline of ten places and stop my brush as the ink on my inkstone runs out.
