○道中筋御締方之儀ハ従 公辺度々被仰出も有之ニ付飛脚御状箱等も過
貫目ニ不相成候様被仰付候ニ付去ル申年相触候儀も有之候処近頃ニ至り等閑之
趣も相聞如何候事ニ候此処別而今度従 公儀厳敷御締方ニ而聊ニ而も過貫
目之荷物ハ通行不相成候ヘハ先年相触候通弥以御用状を始宿状之儀も可成丈
嵩低ニ可致尤一通り之勤見廻之書状ハ指出申間敷事ニ候若御用状不得止
事嵩高ニ相成候節ハ拙者共月番迄罷越其段可達候指図無之内者
御用状たり共嵩高ニ候ハヽ不受取候様申付置候宿状之儀も万一嵩高ニ而指
出候ハヽ其節御右筆部や御坊主迄難受取旨掛合居候而ハ手間取ニ相成御用差
支候旨不及掛合相残候儀も可有之候間左様可被相心得候以上

一、天保十三寅年
〇貞照院様におかれましては、去る秋以来ご病気のところ、ご回復にならず、このたびお住まいよりお移りになることもあり、当分の間、江戸表にご滞在になる予定でございます。そのようにご承知おきください。以上。
二月二十一日 田辺五太夫殿 高田波門
後 御用人・平本作野右衛門より申し聞かせ候。別紙は左の通り。
〇道中筋の取り締まりの儀につきましては、公儀（幕府）より度々お達しもございますことにより、飛脚の御状箱等も規定の貫目を超えないようにとのお達しがありました。去る申年にも触れを出したことがございましたが、近頃に至っては等閑（なおざり）になっている様子もあると聞き及び、いかがなものかと存じます。このたびは特別に公儀より厳しい取り締まりが行われており、わずかでも規定の貫目を超えた荷物は通行がかなわないことになっております。先年に触れを出した通り、やはりお用状をはじめ、宿状の儀も、できるだけ嵩を低くするよう致すべきこと。もっとも、一通りの勤務上の見廻の書状は差し出さないものとすること。万一、お用状がやむを得ず嵩高になる場合には、私ども月番のところへお越しいただき、その旨をお達しください。指示のないまま、お用状であっても嵩高の場合は受け取らないよう申し付けておきます。宿状についても、万一嵩高で差し出す場合には、その節に御右筆部屋・御坊主まで受け取りがたい旨を掛け合っておりますと、手間取りとなってお用に差し支えますし、掛け合うまでもなく残されてしまうこともあろうかと存じますので、そのようにご承知おきください。以上。

Addendum: The following is communicated by Senior Steward Hiramoto Sakunoemon. The separate document reads as follows.
〇 Regarding the regulation of traffic along the highways: as the bakufu (public authorities) have issued repeated directives on this matter, instructions have been given that the boxes carrying official correspondence by express messengers (hikyaku) must not exceed the prescribed weight limit (kanme). Although a notice was circulated in the Year of the Monkey (申年) some years ago, it has come to our attention that of late this has been treated with carelessness, which is a matter of concern. On this particular occasion, the bakufu is enforcing especially strict controls, and any cargo that exceeds the prescribed weight limit, even by a small amount, will not be permitted to pass. Therefore, as per the notice issued in previous years, all official correspondence (goyōjō) as well as accommodation letters (yadojō) should be kept as compact and low in bulk as possible. Furthermore, routine duty inspection letters need not be submitted at all. Should an official letter unavoidably become bulky, please come to us — those of us on monthly duty rotation (tsukiban) — and report the matter. Until such instructions are given, even official letters that are oversized will be refused receipt. Regarding accommodation letters as well, should a bulky one be submitted, if one were to negotiate the matter at the time with the scribes' room (goyūhitsu-beya) or the lay monks' room (gobōzu), it would cause delays and obstruct official business; and there may even be cases where letters are left behind without any negotiation at all. Please bear this in mind. The above is for your information.
