## 嘉永二年（1849年）酉年
### 道中の荷物制限について
道中各所の取り締まりについては、公道（幕府）からたびたびお達しもあることから、飛脚や御状箱なども過大な重量・かさにならないよう、かねてよりお達しもあるところである。御用状をはじめ、宿状についても、できる限りかさを低くするようにすること。もっとも、一通りの勤務見回り等の書状は差し出してはならないこととする。もし御用状がやむを得ずかさ高になる場合には、御右筆部屋へ出向き、こちら月番までその旨を申し達するべきである。指図がないうちは受け取らないよう申し付けておく。宿状についてかさ高の場合は、かけ合うには及ばず、残しておくこともあり得る。この件について、天保七年（1836年）申年、同十三年（1842年）寅年に厳しく達しおいたところ、次第に緩んでいる趣も聞こえることから、改めて今回お達しになった。そのように心得られたい。

右の通り、点取をもって申し聞かせたので、右の本文の間に以下の通り別紙を添えて、十二組小頭どもへ申し通すよう、組小頭へ申し付けた。
> 今度御用人より別紙の通り通達があったところ、これまでたびたび厳重に申し付けおいたにもかかわらず、近頃緩んで状のかさが大きくなっているので、今後かさの大きいものは受け取らない。以来、三歩よりかさ高にして差し出した場合には、残しておくよう申し付けおいたので、重ねて各組の宿状等を差し出す際は、できる限りかさを低くして、飛脚の出る当日八つ時（午後二時頃）までに月番宅まで差し出すこと。

## Kaei 2nd Year (1849, Year of the Rooster)
### Regulations on the Volume of Baggage Along the Road
Regarding the enforcement of controls along roads, as there have been repeated directives from the public highways (i.e., the shogunate), it has been previously ordered that courier pouches and letter boxes should not become excessively heavy or bulky. Therefore, official correspondence as well as lodging letters (*shuku-jō*) should be made as compact as possible. Routine duty inspection letters and the like shall not be submitted at all. If, however, official correspondence unavoidably becomes bulky, one should go to the Scribes' Office (*o-yuhitsu-beya*) and report the matter to the current monthly duty officer. Until instructions are given, the correspondence will not be accepted. In cases where lodging letters are too bulky, they may be left behind without further negotiation. On this matter, strict directives were issued in Tenpō 7 (1836) and Tenpō 13 (1842), but it has been heard that compliance has gradually slackened. Therefore, a renewed directive has been issued at this time. Please take note accordingly.

As the above was communicated through a designated officer (*ten-tori*), the following separate note was attached to the above text and the twelve-unit squad leaders (*kumi-kogashira*) were instructed to pass it along:
> Regarding the separate document recently communicated from the Chief Steward (*go-yōnin*), despite repeated strict instructions issued previously, it has recently become slack and letter bulk has increased. Henceforth, oversized items will not be accepted. From now on, if correspondence exceeding three *bu* in thickness is submitted, it will be left behind. Therefore, each unit is again reminded to make lodging letters and similar correspondence as compact as possible, and to submit them to the monthly duty officer's residence by the Hour of the Rooster (*yatsu-doki*, approximately 2:00 p.m.) on the day the courier departs.
