明治四十四年二月から参陽新報の付録に掲載した豊橋市談は四ケ年半の長年月
に亘つて大正四年七月に至り幸に完結した
そこで折角の長講演を其儘に放棄するのは惜い事であると云ふので今度同新聞
社に於て取纏め之を一冊子となして汎く一般に発行する計画を定めたのが此書
である
講述者たる小生に取りては寧ろ慚愧に堪へぬ次第であるが一面からは又た深く
之を喜ぶべき理由があると考へる
元来豊橋市には纏つた市史がない啻に市史がないのみならす豊橋市の歴史を知
るに足るべき書物は殆どないと云つてもよい状態であつた
之れは甚だ遺憾であると云ふのて先年豊橋市に於て市史編纂の企をなしたが市
史の編纂よりも先づ史料の蒐集が必要であると云ふ事になつた
そこで当時の市参事会は相当の計画を立てゝ市会の協賛を得其目的を進むると
同時に市史資料の展覧会なども開いたが当時此事業に対する各方面の同情は容
易ならざりしもので特に時の助役永野武三君を初め市吏員諸君は勿論田部井市

序言

明治44年（1911年）2月から参陽新報の付録に掲載した豊橋市談は、4年半という長期間にわたって大正4年（1915年）7月まで続き、幸いにも完結することができました。

そこで、せっかくの長期講演をそのまま放置してしまうのは惜しいということで、今回同新聞社において取りまとめ、これを一冊の冊子として広く一般に発行する計画を定めたのが、この書物です。

講述者である私にとっては、むしろ恥ずかしく思う次第ですが、一方では深くこれを喜ぶべき理由があると考えています。

もともと豊橋市には体系的な市史がないばかりでなく、豊橋市の歴史を知るのに十分な書物はほとんどないといってもよい状態でした。

これは非常に残念なことであるということで、先年豊橋市において市史編纂の企画を行いましたが、市史の編纂よりもまず史料の収集が必要であるということになりました。

そこで当時の市参事会は適切な計画を立てて市会の協賛を得てその目的を進めると同時に、市史資料の展覧会なども開催しましたが、当時この事業に対する各方面からの協力は並々ならぬものがあり、特に当時の助役永野武三氏をはじめ市職員の皆様はもちろん、田部井市［文章が途中で切れている］

Preface

The "Toyohashi City Tales" published as a supplement to the San'yo Shinpo newspaper from February 1911 (Meiji 44) continued for four and a half years until July 1915 (Taisho 4), and fortunately reached completion.

Given that it would be regrettable to simply abandon such an extensive series of lectures, the same newspaper company has now decided to compile them into a single booklet for wide public distribution, which is this book.

For me as the narrator, this is rather an embarrassing matter, but from another perspective, I believe there are profound reasons to rejoice in this.

Originally, Toyohashi City not only lacked a comprehensive city history, but was in a state where there were virtually no books sufficient for understanding the history of Toyohashi City.

Recognizing this as extremely regrettable, Toyohashi City undertook a city history compilation project in previous years, but it was determined that the collection of historical materials was necessary before compiling the city history.

Therefore, the municipal council at that time established an appropriate plan, obtained the cooperation of the city assembly, and proceeded with this objective while also holding exhibitions of city historical materials. The support from various quarters for this endeavor was extraordinary, particularly from the then assistant mayor Nagano Takezo and the municipal staff, as well as Tabei City [text cuts off mid-sentence]
