立八町高等小学校長を初め市立各学校長並に職員諸君の如きも普通勤務の余暇
を以て非常の助力を与へられたものである
又資料の所有者にしても不思議な程喜むで其提供に応じたもので寧ろ進むで資
料を提出せられた向も少くなかつたのである此の如き訳で各神社並に寺院を初
め各個人の厚意を受けたるは枚挙に遑あらざりし次第であるが就中大河内子爵
家の如き三上文学博士の如き文学士渡邊世祐君等の如き孰れも貴重なる資料の
閲覧謄写を許されたるのみならず教示を与へられた事も亦た些少でなかつた
かゝる事情によつて次第に曙光を認むるに至つたのが豊橋市市史あるから此豊
橋史談の如きも小生の手によつて成つたものには相違ないが其実は全く豊橋市
の力と之等同情者の余沢とによつて出来たので若しこれが社会に対して寸効で
もありとすれば其功績は之れ等法人又は個人の力に帰せねばならぬと考へる
勿論此史談は其初めに申述べてある如くまだ資料の調査研究中に未定稿を発表
し大方の教を請はむとしたものであるのみならず四ケ年有余に亘つてボツ〳〵
と発表したものであるから実に出物としては体をなさぬ処がある此点に当事者
たる小生が不文無識の致す処に帰せねばならぬので如何にも愧入る次第である
が只資料のあらむ限りを発表し頁数や月日に頓着なく委曲を画した点は到底再
びなし難い事業であつたと確信する
要するに豊橋市史資料の能く蒐集せられたのは或意味に於て豊橋市と之に同情
せる人々との力の塊である而して此史談は其外形こそ粗末であれ其内容に至つ
ては全く其塊から発した余迸であるに相違ない小生が茲に巳れの不文無識をも
顧みず本社が汎く発行せられて永久に保存せられむとするのを喜ぶと云ふのは
実にこの此点を思ふからである
終に望むでて小生は参陽新報社が多年克く困難と戦つて此史談を完結せしめ更に
進むで冊子として発行せられむとするの拳を感謝して止まぬものである

もちろんこの史談は、その初めに申し述べてあるように、まだ資料の調査研究中に未定稿を発表し、皆様のご指導を請おうとしたものであるだけでなく、4年余りにわたってぽつぽつと発表したものであるから、実に出版物としては体をなさない部分があります。この点については当事者である私が不文無識であることに起因するもので、まことに恥ずかしい次第です。
ただ、資料のある限りを発表し、ページ数や月日にこだわることなく詳細を尽くした点は、到底再び行うことの難しい事業であったと確信しています。
要するに、豊橋市史資料がよく収集されたのは、ある意味において豊橋市とこれに協力した人々との力の結晶です。そしてこの史談は、その外形こそ粗末であれ、その内容に至っては全くその結晶から発した副産物であることに違いありません。私がここに自分の不文無識をも顧みず、本社が広く発行されて永久に保存されようとするのを喜ぶというのは、実にこの点を思うからです。

本書には印刷の際の誤字脱字も多少ありますが、残念ながら今一々これを訂正している時間がありません。しかし原稿の誤りも2、3あります。間部詮房と詮勝との名を錯誤させた箇所や、吉祥院が田原一色氏の菩提所であったのを牛久保一色氏の菩提所であるとしたなどは、その著しいものです。これらは他日を待って詳しく訂正する考えです。

The principals and staff of various municipal schools, including the principal of Tatehachicho Higher Elementary School, provided extraordinary assistance using their spare time from regular duties.
Moreover, the owners of historical materials responded with surprising enthusiasm to requests for their provision, and quite a few even proactively offered their materials. Under such circumstances, we received countless acts of kindness from various shrines, temples, and individuals. Among these, the Okochi Viscount family, Dr. Mikami of Literature, Bachelor of Literature Watanabe Seisuke, and others not only permitted the viewing and copying of precious materials but also provided considerable instruction.
Through such circumstances, the Toyohashi City History gradually began to take shape. While this Toyohashi Historical Discussion was indeed completed by my hand, it was in fact entirely accomplished through the power of Toyohashi City and the beneficence of these supporters. If this work has any benefit to society, the credit must be attributed to these corporate bodies and individuals.
Of course, as stated at the beginning, this historical discussion was published as a draft while materials were still being investigated and researched, seeking guidance from all quarters. Moreover, having been published intermittently over more than four years, it truly lacks coherence as a publication. This point must be attributed to my own literary inadequacy and ignorance, which is indeed embarrassing.
However, I am confident that the effort to publish all available materials without regard to page count or deadlines, exhaustively detailing everything, was an endeavor that could hardly be repeated.
In essence, the successful collection of Toyohashi City historical materials was, in a sense, the crystallization of the combined efforts of Toyohashi City and those who sympathized with it. And this historical discussion, though crude in external form, is undoubtedly a byproduct emerging from that crystallization. My joy in seeing this company publish it widely for permanent preservation, despite my own literary inadequacy and ignorance, stems precisely from this consideration.
Finally, I cannot cease to be grateful to the Sanyo Shinpo Company for successfully battling many difficulties over the years to complete this historical discussion and for further proceeding to publish it as a booklet.

Addendum
This book contains some printing errors and omissions, but unfortunately there is no time to correct them all individually. However, there are also two or three errors in the original manuscript. Notable examples include confusing the names of Manabe Akifusa and Akikatsu, and stating that Kichijoin was the family temple of the Tahara Isshiki clan when it was actually that of the Ushikubo Isshiki clan. These will be corrected in detail at a later date.
