歌の心はやすらはでとは
日くれたれどやがてもねも
せずこよひ来たらんとたのめたる人の
たしかにくべきとまちやすらひしに月は
はやかたむきて山のはに入りかゝりけれど
その人はきたらずこれほどならばまち
やすらはではやくねべきものを人のいつ
はりをまことゝおもひねもえせず待ふかし
て月を見て一夜あかせしくやしさよと云心也

歌の心は「やすらはで」とは、
日が暮れたがすぐには寝もせず、今夜来るだろうと約束した人が
確実に来るだろうと待ちわびていたところ、月は
早くも傾いて山の端に沈みかかったけれど
その人は来なかった。これほどならば待ちわびないで早く寝るべきものを、人の
嘘の言葉を本当だと思い、寝ることもできずに待ち続けて
月を見て一夜を明かしたその悔しさよという心である。

The heart of the poem "yasurahade" means:
Though evening came, I did not sleep right away, but waited anxiously for the person who promised to come tonight, believing they would surely come. However, the moon had already begun to tilt and sink behind the mountain ridge, yet that person did not come. If it would be like this, I should have slept early instead of waiting anxiously. But believing the person's false words to be true, I could not sleep and continued waiting, watching the moon all night until dawn - expressing the regret of that experience.
