LA GRENOUILLE QUI VEUT SE FAIRE
AUSSI GROSSE QUE LE BŒUF.
Une grenouille vit un bœuf
Qui lui sembla de belle taille.
Elle, qui n'était pas grosse en tout comme un œuf,
Envieuse, s'étend, et s'enfle, et se travaille
Pour égaler l'animal en grosseur;
Disant: Regardez bien, ma sœur;
Est-ce assez? dites-moi; n'y suis-je point encore? --
Nenni.--M'y voici donc?--Point du tout.--M'y voilà?
--Vous n'en approchez point. La chétive pécore
S'enfla si bien qu'elle creva.
Le monde est plein de gens qui ne sont pas plus sages:
Tout bourgeois veut bâtir comme les grands seigneurs,
Tout petit prince a des ambassadeurs,
Tout marquis veut avoir des pages.

牛のように大きくなりたがった蛙
一匹の蛙が牛を見た
その牛は立派な大きさに見えた。
彼女は卵ほどの大きさしかなかったが、
嫉妬して、身を伸ばし、膨らませ、懸命に努力した
その動物と同じ大きさになろうとして；
こう言いながら：「よく見て、お姉さん；
これで十分？教えて；まだ足りない？」--
「だめよ。」--「じゃあこれで？」--「全然だめ。」--「これはどう？」
--「全然近づいていないわ。」哀れな愚か者は
破裂するまで膨らんだ。
世の中はこれと同じように賢くない人々で満ちている：
すべての市民は大貴族のように建物を建てたがり、
すべての小さな君主は大使を持ちたがり、
すべての侯爵は小姓を持ちたがる。

THE FROG WHO WANTED TO MAKE HERSELF
AS BIG AS THE OX
A frog saw an ox
Which seemed to her of fine size.
She, who was no bigger than an egg in total,
Envious, stretches, and swells, and labors
To equal the animal in size;
Saying: "Look well, my sister;
Is this enough? Tell me; am I not there yet?" --
"No." -- "Am I there now?" -- "Not at all." -- "How about now?"
-- "You're not even close." The pitiful fool
Swelled so much that she burst.
The world is full of people who are no wiser:
Every bourgeois wants to build like the great lords,
Every petty prince wants ambassadors,
Every marquis wants to have pages.
