LE LOUP PLAIDANT CONTRE LE RENARD
PAR-DEVANT LE SINGE.
Un loup disait que l'on l'avait volé:
Un renard, son voisin, d'assez mauvaise vie,
Pour ce prétendu vol par lui fut appelé.
Devant le singe il fut plaidé,
Non point par avocats, mais par chaque partie.
Thémis n'avait point travaillé,
De mémoire de singe, à fait plus embrouillé.
Le magistrat suait en son lit de justice.
Après qu'on eut bien contesté,
Répliqué, crié, tempêté,
Le juge, instruit de leur malice,
Leur dit: Je vous connais de longtemps, mes amis,
Et tous deux vous paîrez l'amende:
Car toi, loup, tu te plains, quoiqu'on ne t'ait rien pris;
Et toi, renard, as pris ce que l'on te demande.
Le juge prétendait qu'à tort et à travers
On ne saurait manquer, condamnant un pervers.

第八話
猿を裁判官とする狼と狐の争い
一匹の狼が盗みにあったと訴えた。
隣に住む狐は、評判の悪い奴で、
この疑いの盗みのかどで呼び出された。
猿の前で裁判が開かれた。
弁護士によってではなく、当事者同士によって。
テミスの女神も、
猿の記憶にある限りでは、これほど込み入った事件を扱ったことはなかった。
裁判官は法廷の席で汗を流していた。
十分に論争し、
反駁し、叫び、怒った後で、
両者の悪意を理解した裁判官は
彼らに言った。「私は君たちを長い間知っている、友よ。
そして二人とも罰金を払うのだ。
なぜなら狼よ、お前は何も盗まれていないのに文句を言っている。
そして狐よ、お前は要求されているものを確かに盗んだからだ。」
裁判官は、でたらめに判決を下しても、
悪人を罰する時には間違うことはないと考えていた。

THE WOLF PLEADING AGAINST THE FOX
BEFORE THE MONKEY
A wolf claimed that he had been robbed:
A fox, his neighbor, of rather bad reputation,
Was summoned for this alleged theft.
The case was pleaded before the monkey,
Not by lawyers, but by each party themselves.
Themis had never worked on
A more tangled case, within monkey memory.
The magistrate sweated on his judgment seat.
After they had contested well,
Replied, cried, and raged,
The judge, informed of their malice,
Said to them: "I have known you for a long time, my friends,
And you will both pay the fine:
For you, wolf, you complain, though nothing was taken from you;
And you, fox, have taken what is demanded of you."
The judge believed that haphazardly,
One could not go wrong when condemning a scoundrel.
