LES DEUX TAUREAUX ET LA
GRENOUILLE.
Deux taureaux combattaient à qui posséderait
Une génisse avec l'empire.
Une grenouille en soupirait.
Qu'avez-vous? se mit à lui dire
Quelqu'un du peuple coassant.
Eh! ne voyez-vous pas, dit-elle,
Que la fin de cette querelle
Sera l'exil de l'un; que l'autre, le chassant,
Le fera renoncer aux campagnes fleuries?
Il ne régnera plus sur l'herbe des prairies,
Viendra dans nos marais régner sur les roseaux;
Et, nous foulant aux pieds jusques au fond des eaux,
Tantôt l'une, et puis l'autre, il faudra qu'on pâtisse
Du combat qu'a causé madame la génisse.
Cette crainte était de bon sens.
L'un des taureaux en leur demeure
S'alla cacher à leurs dépens,
Il en écrasait vingt par heure.
Hélas! on voit que de tout temps,
Les petits ont pâti des sottises des grands.

二頭の雄牛と
蛙
二頭の雄牛が、一頭の雌牛と
その領土を巡って争っていた。
一匹の蛙がそれを嘆いていた。
「どうしたのですか？」と
鳴き声を上げる仲間の一匹が尋ねた。
「ああ！分からないのですか」と蛙は言った、
「この争いの結末は
一方の追放となり、もう一方が勝者となって追い払い、
敗者を花咲く野原から諦めさせることになるでしょう？
もはや草原の草を支配することなく、
我らの沼地にやって来て葦を支配するでしょう；
そして、我らを水底まで足で踏みつけ、
あるときはこちらを、またあるときはあちらを、雌牛様が引き起こした
戦いのせいで我らが苦しまねばならないのです。」
この恐れはもっともなことであった。
雄牛の一頭が彼らの住処に
身を隠しに来て、彼らの犠牲の上に、
一時間に二十匹を踏み潰した。
ああ！いつの時代も、
小さき者は大いなる者の愚行の犠牲となるものである。

THE TWO BULLS AND THE
FROG
Two bulls were fighting over who would possess
A heifer along with her territory.
A frog was sighing about it.
"What's wrong?" asked
Someone from the croaking folk.
"Oh! Don't you see," said she,
"That the end of this quarrel
Will be the exile of one; that the other, chasing him away,
Will make him renounce the flowering fields?
He will no longer reign over the grass of the meadows,
But will come to our marshes to reign over the reeds;
And, trampling us underfoot down to the bottom of the waters,
Now one of us, then another, we'll have to suffer
From the combat caused by Madame Heifer."
This fear was sensible.
One of the bulls came to their dwelling
To hide at their expense,
He crushed twenty per hour.
Alas! We see that in all times,
The small have suffered from the follies of the great.
