CONSEIL TENU PAR LES RATS.
Un chat, nommé Rodilardus,
Faisait des rats telle déconfiture,
Que l'on n'en voyait presque plus,
Tant il en avait mis dedans la sépulture.
Le peu qu'il en restait, n'osant quitter son trou,
Ne trouvait à manger que le quart de son soûl;
Et Rodilard passait, chez la gent misérable,
Non pour un chat, mais pour un diable.
Or, un jour qu'au haut et au loin
Le galant alla chercher femme,
Pendant tout le sabbat qu'il fit avec sa dame
Le demeurant des rats tint chapitre en un coin
Sur la nécessité présente.
Dès l'abord leur doyen, personne fort prudente,
Opina qu'il fallait, et plus tôt que plus tard,
Attacher un grelot au cou de Rodilard;
Qu'ainsi, quand il irait en guerre,

鼠たちの会議
ロディラルドゥスという名の猫が、
鼠たちをひどく打ち負かしていたので、
もうほとんど見かけることもなくなった、

腹四分目の食事しか見つけることができなかった。

COUNCIL HELD BY THE RATS
A cat named Rodilardus
Was causing such havoc among the rats
That one could hardly see any more of them,
So many had he put in their graves.
The few that remained, not daring to leave their holes,
Could find only a quarter of their fill to eat;
And Rodilard was known among the miserable folk
Not as a cat, but as a devil.
Now, one day when far and high
The gallant fellow went to seek a mate,
During all the revelry he had with his lady,
The remaining rats held chapter in a corner
On the present necessity.
First their elder, a very prudent person,
Gave his opinion that they should, sooner rather than later,
Attach a bell to Rodilard's neck;
That thus, when he went to war,
Warned by his approach, they could flee underground;
