LA CIGALE ET LA FOURMI.
La cigale, ayant chanté
Tout l'été,
Se trouva fort dépourvue
Quand la bise fut venue:
Pas un seul petit morceau
De mouche ou de vermisseau.
Elle alla crier famine
Chez la fourmi, sa voisine,
La priant de lui prêter
Quelque grain pour subsister
Jusqu'à la saison nouvelle. --
Je vous paîrai, lui dit-elle,
Avant l'oût, foi d'animal,
Intérêt et principal.
La fourmi n'est pas prêteuse:
C'est là son moindre défaut. --
Que faisiez-vous au temps chaud?
Dit-elle à cette emprunteuse. --
Nuit et jour à tout venant
Je chantais, ne vous déplaise. --
Vous chantiez, j'en suis fort aise!

セミは夏の間中
歌って過ごし、
北風が吹く頃になると
ひどく困窮していることに気づいた。
小さなハエや小虫の
かけらひとつもなかった。
隣人のアリのところへ行って
飢えを訴え、
新しい季節まで
生きていくための
穀物を少し貸してくれるよう頼んだ。
「お返しします」とセミは言った、
「収穫前に、動物の名誉にかけて、
利子も元金も」
アリは貸し手ではない。
それが彼女の最小の欠点だ。
「暖かい時期に何をしていたのですか？」
とアリはこの借り手に言った。
「夜も昼も誰にでも
歌っていました、お気を悪くなさらずに」
「歌っていたのですか、それは結構！
それなら今度は踊りなさい」

THE CICADA AND THE ANT
The cicada, having sung
All summer long,
Found herself quite destitute
When the north wind came:
Not a single tiny morsel
Of fly or little worm.
She went to cry famine
At the ant's, her neighbor,
Begging her to lend
Some grain to subsist on
Until the new season.--
"I will pay you back," she said,
"Before harvest time, on my honor as an animal,
Interest and principal."
The ant is not a lender:
That is her least fault.--
"What were you doing in the warm weather?"
She said to this borrower.--
"Night and day to all comers
I was singing, if you please."--
"You were singing? I'm delighted!
Well then, dance now."
