御ぞんしのゑちごの
くにの大にうだう
一子を一ツめ小ぞう
とてちやうあいし
けるに此小ぞう

かばあまたのばけもの

一ツめどのいまはあつ
はれのばけやう
なればにうだうは
ゐんきよして世を
一ツめにゆずり給へと
すゝめけれはにう
だうもなかまの
すゝめによりて
わが一ツのめをくり
ぬき小ぞうに
ゆづりわがみは
めひとつぼう
とあらため
世をのがれて
くらしける

小ぞうめに世をはわたしたか
あじをやればいゝがむかしと
ちがつていまはばけものも
だへぶしにくひが

現代語訳

ご存知の越後の国の大入道は、一子を「一つ目小僧」と呼んで寵愛していた。この小僧は親に劣らぬ化け者であったので、多くの化け物たちが入道に言うには「一つ目殿は今や立派な化け方をするようになったので、入道は隠居して世を一つ目に譲ってください」と勧めた。そこで入道も仲間の勧めにより、自分の一つの目をくり抜いて小僧に譲り、我が身は「目一つ坊」と名を改めて世を逃れて暮らした。

小僧は世を譲り受けたが、味を見ればよいが、昔と違って今は化け物も堕落して食いにくい。

英語訳

As you know, the great nyūdō (monk-spirit) of Echigo province had an only son whom he called "One-Eyed Boy" and cherished greatly. Since this boy was as skilled at shapeshifting as his parent, many monsters said to the nyūdō: "One-Eyed Lord has now become accomplished in the art of transformation, so nyūdō should retire and pass the world over to One-Eye." Therefore, the nyūdō, following his companions' recommendation, gouged out his own single eye and gave it to the boy, renamed himself "One-Eye Monk," and withdrew from the world to live in seclusion.

The boy inherited control of the world, but though he could taste it, unlike in the old days, monsters have now become corrupt and are hard to consume.
