開（ひら）かしめんと欲（ほつ）す苟（いやしくも ）勤学（きんかく）せずんば仁義（じんぎ）
礼智 信（しん）の道（みち）を弁（べん）せず道（みち）を弁（べん）ぜずんば
僅（わつか）に五十年の星霜（せいさう）を空（むな）しく庸（よう）愚（ぐ）と
なりて一生を経（へ）ん事 歎（たん）ずきの甚き
なりよつて書（しよ）肆（し）の需（もとめ）に応（をう）して云爾（しかいふ）
于時丑春 桃亭賀全識
現代語訳
開かせようと思う。もし勤学をしなければ、仁義礼智信の道を理解することはできない。道を理解しなければ、わずか五十年の歳月を空しく凡庸で愚かな者として一生を過ごすことになる。これは実に嘆かわしいことである。
そこで書肆（書店）の求めに応じて、このように述べるのである。

英語訳
[I] wish to open [these foundations of learning]. If one does not diligently study, one cannot understand the way of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness. If one does not understand the way, one will spend merely fifty years of life in vain as a mediocre and foolish person. This is truly lamentable.
Therefore, in response to the request of the bookseller, I speak thus.
