Having resolved to set out on such a journey—sleeping on grass pillows, as it were—and when I was already saying "tomorrow, the day after tomorrow," things kept going awry, like the crossed beaks of the crow and the kokkeiko bird. "Now then, what shall we do about this?" I fretted, busy with my preparations, and before I knew it, more swiftly than the dream at a lodging where millet is cooking, over a year had passed. It would be against my true intentions to let this sad aspiration come to naught; and so, having long wished to call upon people along the way, and recording here the verses of those with whom I had enjoyed such warm acquaintance over the years—as a small consolation for being left behind in this world, I offer this as a single souvenir, a parting gift.
