【Volume 2, Folio 4 Verso】
The method is as follows: attach a string of length two shaku, one sun, and seven bu to a kane (square rule) of three sun, hold it in the mouth, and look at the person across the way. When the person appears to measure eight rin on the kane, multiply this by three to get two bu, four rin. When the height of the person across the way is estimated to be approximately five shaku, divide five shaku by two bu, four rin, which gives two hundred and eight ken, three-three-three... When this repeating decimal of three-three-three is unclear, multiply by sixty-five to get two hundred and eight ken, two shaku, one sun, and seven bu. Divide this by sixty ken, and you will find the distance to be three chō, twenty-eight ken, two shaku, one sun, and seven bu.
