地球（ちきう）に空気（くうき）の付（つく）と十三里日の陽（よふ）をとりて是（これ）にこ
もる陰（いん）は地球（ちきう）より発（はつ）す合（かつ）して風となり雨（あめ）と也
雲（くも）となる陰（いん）甚（はなはだ）しく登（のぼ）る時は雷（いかづち）となる陽（よう）甚（はなはだ）しく
下つて地球（ちきう）にいるときは震働（しんどふ）す是（これ）地震（ちしん）なり
かくとは人皆（ひとみな）しれど其（その）震（ふるう）ときを斗（はか）る事を不得（えず）
ゆへに出火ともなり怪我（けが）人多く古よりの地震（ぢしん）も
同（おな）し事としられたり是（こゝ）にいにしへよりのぢしん

現代語訳
地球には空気が付着しており、その空気は太陽の陽気を取り込んでそこに満ちている。陰気は地球から発生し、陽気と合わさって風となり、雨となり、雲となる。陰気が甚だしく上昇するときは雷となる。陽気が甚だしく降りて地球の中に入るときは震動する。これが地震である。
このことは人々皆が知っているが、その揺れる時を予測することができない。それゆえ、火災を伴い、怪我人も多く出る。古来からの地震も同じことと知られている。ここに、いにしえからの地震をことごとく記して、ご覧に供しようとするものである。

The Earth is enveloped by air, which absorbs the yang (positive energy) of the sun and becomes filled with it. Yin (negative energy) emanates from the Earth itself, and when combined with yang, it becomes wind, rain, and clouds. When yin rises with great intensity, it becomes thunder. When yang descends with great intensity and enters into the Earth, the Earth trembles. This is what we call an earthquake.
Although all people are aware of this, no one is able to predict when the shaking will occur. For this reason, earthquakes are accompanied by fires and cause many injuries. It is understood that earthquakes since ancient times have all shared this same nature. Here, we intend to compile a complete record of earthquakes from antiquity for the reader's perusal.
