此心はいひかはせし人のもとへゆき
たるに その人のつれなくてあはず
して立わかれ かへるころ 有明の月
を見てうらめしく思ふさま也あふ
てのかえるさ也ともかゝるそらは
かなしかるべきにましてや つれなく
てかえりし つらさ これよりしてのち
〳〵までもわすれかね あかつきほど
物うきものはなきやうに思はるゝなり

【巻物本文 解説】
この歌の心は、歌をやり取りした人のところへ行ったが、その人が冷淡で会ってくれず、立ち別れて帰る頃、有明の月を見て恨めしく思う様子である。逢って帰るのであってもこのような空は悲しいものであるが、まして冷淡に扱われて帰る辛さよ。これ以来、その後もずっと忘れることができず、暁の頃ほど物憂いものはないように思われるのである。

【Scroll Main Text - Commentary】
The sentiment of this poem is as follows: the poet went to visit someone with whom he had exchanged poems, but that person was cold and would not meet him. As he departed and was returning home, he saw the moon at dawn and felt resentful. Even if one were returning after having met successfully, such a sky would be sorrowful, but how much more painful it is to return having been treated coldly. From this time onward, he could never forget this experience, and it seemed to him that nothing was as melancholy as the hours of dawn.

Mibu no Tadamine
At dawn's light,
That seemed so cold
At our parting—
