微力ニして其版を不知博識之方あらんには
知らせ玉へ
一精製新らしきを賞味するに
豆腐と云い
腐（くさ）らして用ると
納豆と書

銘々家宅間内ニ燈し置動く事なきものを
行燈いひ
釣置もあれと夜行の便りニ用ゆるを
挑灯と云
是又不審
現代語訳
私は微力でその理由を知らない。博識な方がおられるなら教えていただきたい。
一 精製して新しいものを賞味するのに
豆腐という。
腐らせて用いるものを
納豆と書く。
また
各自の家宅の屋内に灯して置き、動かすことがないものを
行燈という。
釣り下げて置くこともあるが、夜行の便りに用いるものを
提灯という。
これもまた不審である。
英語訳
My knowledge is limited and I do not know the reason for this. If there are learned individuals, please enlighten me.
One: For refined and fresh things that we enjoy eating,
we say "tofu" (bean curd).
For things that are fermented and used,
we write "natto" (fermented beans).
Also,
Things that are lit and placed inside each household, never moved,
are called "andon" (standing lamp).
Though some may be hung, those used for nighttime travel
are called "chochin" (paper lantern).
This is also puzzling.
