葵御紋之上下衣服畳める節其侭着用
表座敷広間に座して傍輩に言ふ様我
一生涯之内如何様にも尽力精勤して此通り
装束する身分迄昇進して見すべしと

一天保七申年知義江戸詰之節水戸殿之
裏方勤当国今立郡田所村川瀬庄左衛門
と申者所縁有て親敷尋行しに此者最
初下輩に被召抱勤仕之処追々被取立
其頃は相応之格式勤向之様子を見給し故
祝詞を演て賞賛せし処甚赤面の体
に而申様中々私如きものは物の数には無御座
爰に語り可申美談あり 出府之年

葵の御紋の上下衣服を畳む際に、そのまま着用して表座敷の広間に座し、同輩に向かって言うには「我が一生涯のうちに、どのようにでも尽力精勤して、この通りの装束をする身分まで昇進して見せるべし」と豪語したが、その後実家から格段以上の席次である笹木氏へ懇望されて養子に行き、予てからの精志をもって勉励し、格別の有功を賞されて累進昇進し、ついに新番組へ入れられ、葵紋章の御上下を頂戴着用して本望満足を歓んだ。前に本多家に奉公していた時のことを語られたということである。
