On the Introduction of Smallpox Vaccination
First, regarding smallpox: ever since this disease was transmitted from foreign countries in ancient times, no one has been able to escape this calamitous illness, and it has truly been one of life's great ordeals. Even if there were occasionally those who did not contract this disease, such cases were not even one in a thousand. Although some fell ill at an advanced age, generally it would spread and transmit periodically among those up to fourteen or fifteen years of age, depending on seasonal conditions. Initial fever for three days, full eruption for three days, fluid-filled stage for three days, pustulation for three days - a total of twelve days for recovery in cases of favorable smallpox.
