宝珠の如き団子先きの尖りへ紅をさし
土器にのせて供へ首尾能順痘畢りて笹湯
をかけて右起上りへ小豆飯を備へ礼敬して
其侭川へ送りて祝へり尤国々所々にて
祭り方は替るへけれど当地に而は是が順痘の
仕来り也乍併始終遊び〳〵仕舞もあれど
此難に罹りて少年之内に死亡するもの多く
又如何程軽きも跡の一つもつかさるはなく重
きに至而は面部を初手足身体残らず跡つき
中には目鼻口等引つり尚重きは一つ〳〵の
分ちなく瘡疵一面になり蟹の甲のごとく
瘡取れて跡兀【はげる】光るもあり生質美麗の
顔も容貌変り候もの数多有之地肌の黒
白により他所の事は知らず当所に而は白ミツチヤ
赤ミツチヤ蟹ミツチヤと云へり然る処嘉永四
亥年西洋にて種痘之功験究理之書牛
痘之種苗蘭人持渡れる由相聞直様其
頃之名医笠原良策氏
君公え上申し長崎港に至り施療之術

宝珠のような団子の先の尖ったところに紅をさし、土器にのせて供え、首尾よく順痘が終わって笹湯をかけて、右の起き上がり小法師に小豆飯を備え、礼拝して、そのまま川へ送って祝った。もっとも国々所々にて祭り方は変わるであろうけれど、当地においてはこれが順痘の仕来りである。
しかしながら、始終遊び事で済むこともあれど、この難病に罹って少年のうちに死亡する者も多く、またどんなに軽症でも跡の一つも付かないということはなく、重症に至っては顔面を初め手足身体残らず跡が付き、中には目鼻口等が引きつり、なお重症では一つ一つの区別なく瘡疵が一面になり、蟹の甲のように瘡が取れて跡がはげて光るものもある。生まれつき美麗な顔も容貌が変わってしまうものが数多くあり、地肌の黒白によって他所のことは知らないが、当所においては白ミツチャ、赤ミツチャ、蟹ミツチャと言った。
そうしたところ、嘉永四亥年(1851年)、西洋にて種痘の功験を究理した書物と牛痘の種苗をオランダ人が持ち渡ったという話を聞き、すぐさまその頃の名医笠原良策氏が君公へ上申し、長崎港に至り、施療の術や接続の仕法等の伝習を請うて帰られた(割書:三府を初め諸国にて第一番の巨魁とのことである)。

Dumplings shaped like sacred jewels with their pointed tips colored with red pigment would be placed on earthenware vessels as offerings. When the favorable smallpox had successfully concluded, bamboo-leaf water would be sprinkled over them, and rice with red beans would be offered to the okiagari koboshi dolls, which were then worshipped and sent down the river in celebration. Of course, the methods of worship would vary from country to country and place to place, but in our locality, this was the customary practice for favorable smallpox.
However, while some cases ended with nothing more than playful activities throughout, many children died from contracting this severe illness. Even in the mildest cases, not one person escaped without scars, and in severe cases, marks would remain on the face, hands, feet, and entire body. In some cases, the eyes, nose, mouth, and other features would become distorted, and in the most severe cases, the individual pox would merge into one continuous mass of sores, with scabs falling off like a crab's shell, leaving bald, shiny scars behind. Even those born with beautiful faces would have their appearance changed, and many suffered such disfigurement. I don't know about other places, but in our locality, depending on their skin complexion, people called them "white pockmarked," "red pockmarked," or "crab pockmarked."
Under these circumstances, in Kaei 4, year of the boar (1851), we heard that Dutch people had brought over books on the principles and effectiveness of smallpox vaccination along with cowpox seedlings from the West. Immediately, the renowned physician of that time, Mr. Kasahara Ryōsaku, petitioned our lord, traveled to Nagasaki port, and returned after learning the techniques of medical treatment and methods of inoculation (marginal note: He was said to be the foremost leader in the three capitals and various provinces).
