In the eleventh month of the same year, the former district administrative office in Edo-machi was converted into a vaccination clinic (jotōkan), numerous officials were appointed to various positions, and children who had not yet contracted smallpox were called in one after another for inoculation procedures. Subsequently, the clinic was relocated to various places according to circumstances, requiring considerable effort in administration. Initially, many people regarded it with suspicion as some kind of strange foreign technique and avoided it with distaste, but gradually, seeing its actual effectiveness, it eventually became popular as it is today. Now that this has come to pass, we will no longer see people with disfigured faces marked by smallpox scars (mitchya) in future generations, which is truly a grateful technique and a matter for celebration. Therefore, I intend to paint such appearances to show them to people of distant future generations.
Regarding New Year Decorations of Straw Pine Gate Ornaments
Generally, New Year decorations have been a universal practice throughout the Imperial nation since ancient times, and while there are slight differences from place to place, they are mostly similar in general. Therefore, without speaking of other matters, in our locality it was customary to erect straw pine gate ornaments (wara kadomatsu) from the 28th day of the year through the first three days of the New Year at the gates of the castle's inner and outer baileys, the gates of high-ranking retainers, those with land holdings of 300 koku or more, various unit commanders and above, as well as meritorious elders and townspeople's gates and entrances. However, after the Restoration, all of this was discontinued, and for future generations to know what this looked like...
